Assistance in removing malaware

Unread postby BLEUTROUT1969 » March 4th, 2010, 11:40 pm

My computer has slowed down considerably (I have defragged, cleaned temp files,etc...), even when not on the internet. I had a pop-up virus a while back, the kind that wants you to buy their software, I managed to stop it but I don't think I removed the virus. I have a startup program that shows just the number '1'. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Bazooka runs for one millisecond and then completes scan? thanks in advance.

Re: Assistance in removing malaware

Unread postby askey127 » March 10th, 2010, 6:14 am

HI BLEUTROUT1969,
Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
There are some Issues with infections in relation to PunkBuster:
Your computer has installed gaming tools. Some of these, like Punkbuster, use spyware techniques to engage in the anti-piracy battle.
In the process, they take control of much of your PC, and they actually meet the definition of spyware/malware.
They are sometimes designed to prevent orderly removal or modification, and they have only limited respect for retaining the overall security and integrity of your machine.
It is not a certainty that your computer can be cleaned without breaking or removing some of these programs, and this could result in not being able to play the associated games, or corruption of your system.
Since we are dedicated to causing No Harm, we won't normally work on machines with this type of program installed without explicit permission from the owner.
If you want to continue using the machine in this way, you should consider using imaging software like Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage, or Terabyte Image, which can put your entire C: drive back into an earlier state whenever the infections or malfunctions get too severe.

If you really want to clean this machine, I will help, but if you so choose, understand there is NO assurance you will be able to do games afterwards.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [FlashPlayerUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe -p
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE
O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 8.1.5
Bazooka Scanner
Coupon Printer for Windows
Free Window Registry Repair
FreeFixer
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 17
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton Security Scan
Norton WMI Update

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it.
If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

Re: Assistance in removing malaware

Unread postby BLEUTROUT1969 » March 10th, 2010, 1:19 pm

Thank you askey127,for your time in helping to resolve this problem. I no longer use this PC for gaming so that will not be an issue.
I did everything you asked to the best of my knowledge, repeatedly restarting the PC to insure removal took affect. Two things I wanted to mention, Spybot will not download correctly from the internet ( not sure what this means, note* this was attempted way before following your instructions.) The second thing is that when trying to delete:
Coupon Printer for Windows, program from Add/Remove I was unable to do so and received this: Invalid Uninstall Control File, and the C:\Program Files\Coupons\Uninstall\uninstall.xml, also recieved Internal Error 2753.Nss.exe when trying to unsuccessfully uninstall Symantec, like you said, so I ran the Norton removal tool, again like you said.
askey127 wrote:HI BLEUTROUT1969,
Sorry for the delay in answering your request.

BLEUTROUT1969,
------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: If you ever needed to restore your registry later, you would go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Registry Mechanic 9.0
Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download OTM and save to your Desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy). Do NOT copy the word "Code" :
Code: Select all

[emptytemp]
[start explorer]
  • Return to OTM, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next Reply.
  • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTM.
Note: the logs are saved in C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\ if you need to retrieve one.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath.
Copy and paste this filepath:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\XTrapD12.sys

Then hit Submit or Upload, depending on the scanner.
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy and/or save the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
or virus.org here: http://scanner.virus.org/

So we are looking for the results from OTM, and the results from Jotti.

Both programs want me to browse for the file path, I tried finding it and only got as far as C:\WINDOWS\system32\ but could not find the extension "XTrapD12.sys"

OK, I think I was able to get it to work, I created a new text folder and had this "C:\WINDOWS\system32\XTrapD12.sys" as the only text then I used the browse to upload that folder to the Jotti's ( they all said: "nothing found") and Virustotal, here are the results from virustotal:

BLEUTROUT1969,
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.3 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
It may ask to update to 9.3.1
Allow it if questioned.
------------------------------------------------------------
Older versions of Java have been vulnerable to malware infections in the past. It is important to install the newest version and make sure all older ones have been removed.
(We have already removed the old ones).
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
It is currently the 1st item on the page (the page changes often), called JDK 6 Update 18
The Item has two download buttons.
Click on the button labeled "Download JRE". Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK"
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan. Go take a snooze. :D
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

askey127, Is there another online scanner that works well? I've tried running it about 5-6 times. The first time I ran it, it froze at 35% done, now it keeps freezing at about 2% and about 14 minutes into the scan. I will continue to try to get the full scan done until you reply, thanks for the help so far, K
ps) PC still runs the same, very slow.

BLEUTROUT1969,

------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.
If you are asked to allow a reboot, please allow it.
------------------------------------------------
Double-click the file you used for Rkill and run it again.
-----------------------------------------------
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Disable or Exit your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile will be created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please paste the contents of this file in your post.

Please post the contents of the Malwarebytes log, and the logfile from the ESET scanner.

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Does this mean it's not downloading correctly?

That's a good result, just fine actually.
Do not take any action on those files.

The important thing is to NOT reboot between running Rkill and running either scan.
You can run Rkill as many times as necessary, once before each scan. The processes terminated by Rkill will start up again if you reboot, and if they are running, those processes may stop you from running the scans.

If you are asked to reboot after the MBAM scan, do it.
Just run Rkill once again before the ESET scan.

If there is any problem with running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), stop and let me know.

For ESET, via IE, I get this toolbar message ( below), looks correct to me, then I accept terms, and click START and it opens a new window that is all grey except for a small red X in a box in upper left hand corner and a paper icon in upper right that is broken/torn.

I didn't understand this:
Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
Quote:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

Was I supposed to do that with the Blacklight program, if so I couldn't find a s'tart' or 'run' button. If I was supposed to do that from the desktop start, I tried and it said it "cannot find that file".
I ran the scan anyways, but it didn't find anything, when I closed it there was no log on my desktop.
