My toshiba tecra laptop is malfunctioning!!! HELP!

Unread postby tmorales » February 27th, 2010, 6:51 pm

My laptop has started running EXTREMELY slow, freezes and we have to open up task manager to get it to unfreeze and then we have to shut the computer down or it will refreeze. We got an odd message the other day saying we didn't have enough memory for windows media player to play, and to shut down all the other programs, and nothing else was running. That time was the only time we have EVER seen a message like that. Windows media player isn't playing right, it keeps freezing and cutting itself off. The cursor has also started going biserck and floating all over the screen. It hasn't gotten to the point that it is extremely hard to move. Scrolling down a internet page is a nightmare. It freezes when you try to scroll up and down.

I am a college student and a lot of my classes are online. This is my only computer and my instructors are not very understanding when it freezes and I can't complete my timed test. So, any help is appreciated!!!!!

We got an odd message the other day saying we didn't have enough memory for windows media player to play, and to shut down all the other programs, and nothing else was running.

Although it appears that you do not have any other programs, you in fact have rather a lot of programs starting and running in the background. We will address this a bit later on, let’s do some checking first. I would also like to point out that your version of Interner Explorer is outdated and once the computer is clean it might be wise to update to the latest version.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    FlashGet 1.9.6.1073 recommend uninstall
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    pdfforge Toolbar v1.0
    Viewpoint Media Player

Unread postby muppy03 » March 6th, 2010, 11:10 pm

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

Please reply with:-
  • New HJT log
  • MBAM log

Hi there, can you give me an update on how the computer is behaving. I have not seen a anything of great concern so far but I would like you to run an online scan to make sure.

As I said earlier you have a massive amount of programs starting when you turn the computer on and this can dramatically slow the system down. I have listed a few that do no need to run below, but there is many more that are deemed users choice, so you will have to do a bit of investigating to find out what you need to run in the background and what you don’t.

This next step is your choice. The below items I am getting you to fix with HJT are for programs that do not need to start up when you turn your computer on. Doing the below step WILL NOT UNINSTALL these programs ONLY stop them from running at startup. All will be available when you need them. The bonus is it will make your startup time a bit shorter

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAX] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\Smax4.exe /tray
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TMERzCtl.EXE] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TME3\TMERzCtl.EXE /Service
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPSMain] TPSMain.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmoothView] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Zooming Utility\SmoothView.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TAudEffect] C:\Program Files\Toshiba\TAudEffect\TAudEff.exe /run
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet /keeploaded /nodetect
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pinger] c:\toshiba\ivp\ism\pinger.exe /run
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IVPServiceMgr] C:\toshiba\ivp\ism\ivpsvmgr.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked then REBOOT the computer.

Please re run ATF cleaner

The laptop hasn't been freezing as bad as usual. As far as how its running, we haven't used it much the last few days, so we aren't sure if its running any faster or not. But we DO know that it is not freezing and hanging up like it was before.

Well that’s a start ! As I have mentioned the problem does not appear to be malware related and you do have quite a few programs that could be stopped running at startup. This would help overall performance greatly.

You should really consider updating to XP SP3, support for SP2 will end on July 13, 2010.
Also Internet Explorer v6.00, needs updating to version 8 as soon as you are able.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 18.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
    Java(TM) 6 Update 16

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

You can delete RSIT from your Desktop and it associated folder C:\RSIT

You might ask at a general computer help forum like Tech Support Guy for assistance with what programs you need running at startup.
