Unread postby SteveB » March 22nd, 2005, 4:57 pm

Hi I've been infected with a variant of CWS which I can't seem to permantley delete. I use Adaware 6.0, SpyBot S&D 1.3, Microsoft Antispyware, SpyBlaster & Browser Hijack Blaster, all of which seem to be able to remove CWS from my system, but after a reboot, it always returns. At present, my Default Search page has changed to savehits.com rather than Google.
Being a new, basic user. I hoped that the above programs would clear it, but since they haven't worked, I'd appreciate any expert help available in getting rid of this Spyware.
Many thanks in advance.
Here is my HJT log

Hello SteveB ,welcome to the forum.

Open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thanks LDTate, I can confirm I've done everything as you instructed. The main difference was upgrading to Ad Aware SE 1.05, I had been using 6.0.
This found 36 critical objects which, after a couple of scans & a reboot, seem to have removed the threat. A further scan with Spybot seems to confirm everything is Ok. My PC would appear to be behaving itself & I've not got savehits.com as my default search engine.
Here is my updated HJT Log:-

If you can see any problems, please let me know. I'd also appreciate your advice on the amount of Spyware products I'm using - is it too many ???
Many thanks again.

.
You should only run 1 Ant-Virus program at a time. The amount of spyware programs to have is up to the individual. I use Grisoft, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster, IE-Spyads and SpywareGuard along with a Firewall.

Good Job  :D

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

Hi,
Unfortunatley, I've just done a further scan with Spybot & all 12 entries for WWWCoolSearch.WCADW have returned. It appears that Adaware has similar success as Spybot in removing the items, but not from keeping it off the system. Here is my latest HJT log :-

Looks like it came back

I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.savehits.com//

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi there. this spyware is hard to kill !
Upon taking all the actions as instructed (emptying files in safe mode, clearing out recycle bin, fixed the items in HJT etc), everything looked good. A search with Spybot & Adaware came up negative.
I then did a search with Microsoft Antispyware Beta, and it found a possible browser hijack. I removed this & then did another search with Spybot immediatley afterwards & CoolWWWSeach had returned in full.
Here is my updated HJT log:-

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

R1 ALL

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Ok fully removed all items under R1 in HJT, emptied recycle bin (which was empty anyway) & I now have a blank default search engine in my browser. How do I customise it so I can get google to become my default browser? The customise button just produces a further blank page??? :?
here is the latest HJT log :-

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Good Job :D

After doing the below, see if you can change your home page.

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Thanks for all your help here, it looks like we're at the end of this battle, its a pity its not the war.
Is it wise to remove all of my previous resore points? when previously infected, this was the only way I could restore my PC?
I'm not doubting your advice in any way, as at this moment, I'm v impressed, but need your clarification to clear all of my previous restore points - this must be me being a newbie !!!
Thanks

That's why you want to create a new fresh restore point. The junk we cleaned is in there. If you follow what I posted, it'll only be off for one reboot. Turn off, reboot, turn back on :D

its a pity its not the war.
Amen to that :thumbleft: :thumbleft:
