Trojans and browser hijack problems

Unread postby GuinnessPhish » February 12th, 2010, 3:55 pm

Hello,

I have a problem with my computer, which I believe is related to the Cox internet security Suite I downloaded a couple of years ago. Upon downloading it, I was not happy with the way it performed, so I uninstalled it, but apparently not 100%. Since that time, I have been seeing a screen pop up on my computer every time I start the computer that says: "Security Product could not start on your machine". This sceen requires that I press the "OK" button before another screen pops up saying something like "Security Application could not start. Repair installation? (yes, no)"

I read this thread and followed the steps recommended, but I am still having the problem:

Re: Trojans and browser hijack problems

Unread postby shinybeast » February 17th, 2010, 8:07 pm

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

My handle is shinybeast and I will be assisting you in the removal of malware your computer may have.

Please follow these guidelines as we work to clean your computer.
  • Read through the instructions before you perform them and if you have questions please ask before you perform them. Please do not guess. I will be happy to clarify or explain.
  • Perform all instructions in the order given.
  • Stick with the process until I give you an "all clean." If the symptoms are gone, it does not necessarily mean your computer is safe and secure.
  • Do not run any other tools to remove malware while we are working.
  • If your security software throws up warnings about some of these tools, please allow these tools to run.
  • If you have not done so, please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules and How to get help at this forum where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
NOTE: I am in training here at Malware Removal University.
I must get my replies to you approved by a malware expert which means it could take slightly longer to get back to you.
Your patience is appreciated. :)

I will have further instructions once they get approved. In the mean time, please tell me if you want all traces of Cox Security deleted as there are still quite a few bits left.

Yes, I would like all traces of Cox Security deleted from my system....or whatever is needed to stop that error message from appearing when I turn on my computer.

Thanks!

Hi GuinessPhish,

Apologies for the delay.

We should be able to clean that up. Please perform the following.

Uninstall Programs

Click Start, click Run...
Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Add or Remove Programs
For each of the programs listed below, highlight them in the list and click Remove

Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Once finished, close Add or Remove Programs window

  • Click Here to download the installer for Adobe Reader and save AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to a convenient location.
  • Double-click AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe and follow the prompts to install Adobe Reader 9.3

Scan with RSIT

  • Click here to download Random's System Information Tool by random/random and save it to your desktop.

Hello GuinessPhish,

Registry "Cleaner," "Fixer," or "Optimizer" Warning

I notice you have the following program(s) installed.

Uniblue RegistryBooster 2010

I strongly suggest you avoid anything that claims to clean, fix or optimize the Windows registry and recommend you uninstall the above program(s). Even the best programs have occasionally made "mistakes" and made Windows inoperable by deleting critical registry entries. The gains are negligible and the risks are great.

Check the links below for various explanations and opinions.
An example of what can happen.
Registry cleaners?
Do I Need a Registry Cleaner? - Bill Pytlovany (creator of WinPatrol)
Should I Use a Registry Cleaner?

Please perform the following.

Backup Registry With ERUNT

Modifying the Windows Registry can occasionally create problems, so it is imperative we back it up first.

  • Please download ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) by Lars Hederer from one of the links below and save it to a convenient location
    Link 1 | Link 2
  • Double-click the file erunt-setup.exe that you downloaded to start the install
  • After the language selection, click Next three times to choose the default location, folder name and start menu folder.
  • You may choose to uncheck the desktop icons at the Select Additional Options window.
  • IMPORTANT: After clicking Install, you will get a popup asking if you want to run ERUNT at each startup. Click No (Once we are finished, you may choose to enable this option).
  • Keep the option to run ERUNT checked and click Finish
  • Click OK at the Welcome dialog box
  • Ensure the System Registry and Current User Registry boxes are checked and click OK to backup the registry to the default location and filename. You will be asked if you want to create the folder, click Yes
  • A window should appear that says "Registry backup is complete!." Click OK in that window.

NOTE: If the "registry optimization tool" NTREGOPT is installed with ERUNT, do NOT, for any reason, run NTREGOPT.

IMPORTANT: If you do not complete ERUNT backup successfully, do not continue further and post back to let me know.

Download and run OTM

Click here to download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Close all running programs and save any work as OTM will require a reboot.
  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Copy the following code and paste it in the white space under Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved (below the yellow line at the bottom of the window).
    Code: Select all
    :services
    CSS DVP
    dvpapi
    SysEnforce

    "C:\Documents and Settings\Gregory Prior\Desktop\utorrent.exe"=-

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]

  • Click the MoveIt! button
  • OTM will want to reboot the machine. Please do so.
  • After reboot, if the log does not open, please find the log as described below and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
    • Start Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
    • In Notepad, click File, then click Open
    • In the File Name: box, type *.log then press Enter
    • Navigate to C:\_OTM\MovedFiles and locate the newest log and open it (they are named as {date}_{time}.log)
    • Copy the contents of the log and paste it in your next reply.

Please reply with OTM log and inform me if startup message is gone.

Regarding the uniblue registry cleaner....thanks for informing me of the dangers. I downloaded that program after getting some error message (which I cannot remember) while I tried to upload a video to youtube.

I am having a problem which is unrelated to the original problem I wrote about regarding the "security product could not start....do you want to repair installation" problem.

The problem I'm having, which was the reason I downloaded the registry cleaner, is that I am unable to upload videos to youtube. I've uploaded many videos from this computer in the past with no problem, and the videos I'm trying to upload are not too large or too long in length, as I've uploaded them from a different computer with no problem, taking very little time to upload.

When I try to upload the videos, they start to upload, but then the progress bar just freezes, and I am then unable to browse any other sites at all, and the upload never completes. I then have to restart the computer in order to have any web browsing capabilities. I've tried using firefox and internet explorer with the same results, and I've also uninstalled and reinstalled both browsers.

If I do not upload any videos to youtube, the computer seems to work fine.

Might you be able to help me with this, or should I repost this to the forum?

Thanks again for all the help.

Hi GuinessPhish,

Thanks again for all the help.

You're very welcome. :)

Let's make sure the computer is clean and if the issue persists I can direct you to another forum that may be able to help.

You entitled the topic here "Trojans and browser hijacks." Do you have browser redirects or other symptoms of a hijacked browser? I haven't seen any trojans so let's do a rootkit scan to check for a common redirecting infection.

Scan with GMER

Click here to download GMER Rootkit Scanner and save it to your desktop.

  • Disconnect your computer from the internet and disable all security software before starting the scan.
A guide to do this can be found here. If you still aren't sure how to disable protection software, please ask.
  • Double click the randomly named GMER file. If asked to allow GMER to run, please allow it.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following boxes:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All
  • Then click the Scan button and wait for it to finish. It can take a while so please be patient.
  • Once done click on the Save.. button at lower right, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" (include the quotes or it will save as a .log file)
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while GMER is running.

Please reply with the GMER log (ark.txt)

I ran the program as directed, however after about an hour I cjhecked to see how it was going. My computer svcreen would not turn on, even when I moved the mouse or touched the keyboard, so I rebooted the computer.

When I rebooted the computer, a microsoft windows message came up: "The System has recovered from a serious error. A Log of this error has been created."

The error report contains this:

"BCCode : 10000050 BCP1 : ED45BB30 BCP2 : 00000001 BCP3 : ECE5EFA6
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 768_1 "

Then there's another link to view technical information about the error report and that says:

"The following files will be included in this error report:

C:\DOCUME~1\GREGOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd965.dir00\Mini022110-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\GREGOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd965.dir00\sysdata.xml"

Should I try to run the GMER program again?

To answer your question: "You entitled the topic here "Trojans and browser hijacks." Do you have browser redirects or other symptoms of a hijacked browser? I haven't seen any trojans so let's do a rootkit scan to check for a common redirecting infection.
"

I only titled the topic that because when I did a google search about the problem I was having, I found a link to this forum where someone also had the same problem with the cox internet security suite, and that is the title that person used for his posts.

I am not having any problems with browser redirects or other symptoms of a highjacked browser....not that I know of anyway.

Hi GuinessPhish,

Don't bother with trying GMER again. I do not see anything malware related so far. Let's try an online scan and see if we find anything.

ESET Online Scan

Before you begin:

Re: Trojans and browser hijack problems

Unread postby shinybeast » February 22nd, 2010, 11:52 am

Hi GuinessPhish,

It does not appear the uploading video issue is related to malware as your computer appears clean.

The remaining issue is not malware related and beyond my experience.

I suggest you try one of these sites and post in the appropriate forum.
Registration is free and so is the help.

BleepingComputer.com
What The Tech
Techguy.org
The Elder Geek on Windows

Please delete RSIT.exe and randomly named GMER file if they still exist.

Implementing the following suggestions will greatly reduce your chances of malware problems in the future.

Update Windows

It is important to keep Windows and Microsoft programs updated to close vulnerabilities as they are discovered.

I suggest that you occasionally visit Microsoft Update and install all important updates. Please visit Microsoft Update as soon as possible as described below.

Close all windows and temporarily disable your anti-virus (usually through a tray icon)

Use Internet Explorer to visit this site: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-US

Once the page loads follow instructions to install all critical updates. You may need to repeat this process until fully updated.

Keep installed programs up to date

Anti-virus
Most important is keeping your anti-virus software up to date. An out of date anti-virus is not much better than no anti-virus. If your anti-virus is not set to update automatically (preferred), it is imperative that you occasionally update it manually. You usually can accomplish this through a tray icon.

Update Other Vulnerable Software
Malware writers are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in commonly used applications. There are several online sites which will scan your computer for outdated software. I've listed two below. I recommend occasionally visiting and scanning your computer to detect vulnerable software that should be updated.
Secunia Online Software Inspector
F-Secure Health Check

Mozilla Firefox Plug-in Check
If using Firefox, Click here to visit Mozilla, check your plug-ins and update them as necessary.

Best Practices for Email and Downloaded Files.

  • Do not read emails from unknown sources.
  • Make it a habit to never open email attachments from anyone, including people you know, unless you absolutely have to. If you need to open an attachment, scan it with your anti-virus before you open it.
  • Do not use Peer to Peer software to "share" media and software. You will get more than you expected and the "bonus" will not be something you want and will bring you back seeking help.
  • Do not use keygens or hacked software. First, it is stealing. Second, it is almost always infected with something. If you cannot afford to buy something, there is likely a free alternative that will be a good substitute. Search around and seek out advice from a trusted forum. Most will be glad to tell you of their favorite free program that performs the job you want done.

Additional Protection Programs

The programs listed below are excellent for improving your computer's security.

WinPatrol by Bill Pytlovany - "WinPatrol is a multi-purpose utility designed to increase performance and protect against unwanted changes." Information on it's many features can be found here

MVPS Hosts file - A replacement HOSTS file that redirects known malicious and ad serving sites to the localhost, thus preventing connection to them.
Note: MVPS Hosts file can sometimes slow down the computer so read the information on the site to mitigate this effect.

I encourage you to check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
and miekiemoes' article "How to prevent Malware:"

If you have any questions about these suggestions, I would be happy to answer them.

Regards,
shinybeast

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
