:) Hi Tomevans00,

I apologize for the delay. :(

Checking your log, I noticed that your Windows doesn't have any of the service packs. However, there are indications that you have validated your Windows XP. Have you been trying to update XP? You won't be able to get any security updates/patches for Win XP if no Service Packs are installed. You can get your SP1 here now, and SP2 later after the computer is cleaned up. I also wonder if your antivirus program, AVAST, is up-to-date. Are you having any problems updating AVAST? It would be a good idea to update it to its latest definitions. You can also configure it to update automatically.

Right click on the blue avast! ball with "a" on it (In the taskbar near the clock) and select "Program Settings." This will open the "avast! settings" window.
In the panel on the left, select "Update (Basic)."
Check "Automatic" for both "Virus database" and "Program."
Click on "OK" to save your selections and exit the program.

If you are having problem with AVAST, I can give you the links for a couple of other good free antivirus programs. Please let me know.

I couldn't see any firewall either. I'll be giving you the links for some good free firewalls later. Now let's begin working.

Please download and update:

Ewido Security Suit

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful") Do not Use it Yet

Spybot S & D
Remember to "immunize" after updating so that the latest definitions can be enabled. Do not use it yet.

Ad-Aware SE Do not use it yet.

Ccleaner

Run Ccleaner

Click on Options, Select Advanced Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. (Do not use the "Issues" block) Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything EXCEPT cookies, the Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

Now please run HijackThis again. Make sure that all windows, except HijackThis, are closed. Put a checkmark against the following entries and click "Fix Checked".

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Please navigate and delete this folder in safe mode:

Reboot computer into "Safe Mode" Using the F8 method: Restart the computer
- As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Boot Menu appears
- Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item

C:\Program Files\xpdrv32 <----------------folder

While still in Safe Mode run Ewido, Spybot S& D and Adaware SE

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method below. Let me know if you run into any problems doing that:

a. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
b. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
c. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
d. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
e. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Ewido Security Suit

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Settings, and under "What to scan?", select "Every file" then click ok.
Then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again. Do Not reboot yet.

Spybot S & D

a. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
b. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
c. Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the Updates.
d. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
e. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
f. Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
g. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows. Do not reboot yet.

Adaware SE

Hi Tomevans00 :) ,

I am still waiting for your new HijackThis and Ewido logs.
By the way, there is something puzzling me about your log. Maybe you can help. Your browser IE shows SP2, but XP itself doesn't, which is not a usual occurance. Do you have any idea how that came about?

hi thanks for your work, much appriciated. i'm just working through just steps now. i managed to in install SP2 but i'm still going to post a Hijack and Ewido log as soon as i've finished your steps.

the only reason for the SP2 in IE and not XP could be that my computer had an incomplete installation of SP2 which now should've been overwritten.

Hi Tomevans00,

Your log looks much better. :) However, I see NO indication of an antivirus program running. You need to install an antivirus program immediately, NOW! Update it and run a complete scan to make sure you haven't been infected while running without an AV program installed! Do this before you do anything else! Here are some good and free antivirus programs that are available. Check them out, but make sure that you only install one of them. Running more than one antivirus program is not advisable as they would conflict with each other, leaving the computer vulnerable and unstable. Again, make sure that you decide on one only, and make sure that you update it before you run the complete scan. I'll also give you some links for firewall as well in my next post.

AntiVir here
AVG here
Avast here

Before you run the HijackThis again, I would like to make sure that nothing is disabled at the start up. If you have disabled anything, please go to Start>Run and type in the window "msconfig". Then go to the "start up" tab and click on "enable all" and then click "OK". It it asks you to reboot, please do not reboot. Later, you can go back and disable the items that you do not wish to run at the start up.

Run HijackThis again. Close all other windows. Put a checkmark against the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Click on "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis.

Run an online scan here

Run and post a new HijackThis log and the report from the Panda scan, please.

Hi Tomevans00,

I am glad to see that you have antivirus, and that you are not reinfected, but there is a problem here. Seems like you have two antivirus programs running at the same time, i.e AVG and Trend Micro Internet Security 2006.

Please decide on one of the programs, and uninstall the other one.

Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on Add/Remove Programs Find the program that you don't want (Trendmicro or AVG)and Click on Remove.

Post back a new HijackThis log please.

Hi tomevans00 :) ,

I recommend that you exercise more caution in what you download and what sites you frequent. The internet is not a safe place, in fact it can be downright dangerous, and needs to be treated accordingly.

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove ICOO Loader. This Program is identified as harmful.

Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 5 .

To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software

Or you can get the manual download here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Once you have installed the latest update, please remove all older instances of Java listed in the Add/Remove Programs.

Now, please run HijackThis. Put a checkmark against the following entries. Please close all other windows except HijackThis and have HijackThis fix them.

Reboot computer into "Safe Mode" Using the F8 method:

Restart the computer
As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Boot Menu appears
Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item

Navigate and delete the following folder in bold if present:

C:\Program Files\ICOO Loader

Also in Safe Mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot in Normal Mode.

Run an online scan here

Run and post a new HijackThis log and the report from the Panda scan, please.
