Desktop Turned Green, says "Your System Is Infected!"

Unread postby mintjellie » January 25th, 2010, 12:59 pm

I have no idea how this happened. I was reading an article about the the local mayoral election, I got up to have a smoke, I came back and found that my browser (Firefox 3.0.17) had crashed, and my wallpaper had changed to a green background with a large black box in the middle. The larg black box contains the following text :

"YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED!" in large red text

in smaller white text

"System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware Activity has been detected. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed."

I also get intermittent pop ups asking me to download "official intrusion detection system". (sic)
