Unable to connect to internet after Malware attack

Unread postby eddie57 » January 14th, 2010, 12:47 am

My mother was on the computer at the time so I am not completly sure how this started. She said she "temporarily allowed pop ups" because she was trying to view something and couldn't. Shortly after the computer was barragged by pop ups and fake security warnings. I came over and tried to run Malwarebytes and Avast! but I couldn't do anything except click on pop ups. I restarted the computer in safe mode and ran Malwarebytes, which found and deleted 4 or 5 "Trojan fake security warning". I ran a full Avast! scan and it found nothing. I restarted agin in normal mode but now I am unable to connect to the internet. After restarting the modem and still no luck I restarted the computer in safe mode again and ran a HijackThis scan. Although I ran Avast! and Malwarebytes I am unsure how up to date their databases were since I am not sure how often my mother updates them and I can't connect to the internet now. Here is the Uninstall list and log file.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

NEXT I would like you to restore your Proxy settings as they have been modified by malware and that's the reason why you can't connect.
To do this:
In Internet Explorer: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings >uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

REBOOT COMPUTER

Once the above is done update MBAM and run a full scan in normal mode.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

NEXT Your uninstall list was incomplete, please post a full one.

Please reply with:-
  • MBAM log
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)
  • Uninstall list
  • Update on how things are running

Re: Unable to connect to internet after Malware attack

Unread postby muppy03 » January 19th, 2010, 5:07 pm

Thank you for your help! Internet is working again

Great!
Shortly after the computer was barragged by pop ups and fake security warnings.

Are you still having any of the above, please update me on all or any problems that you are still having.

You appear to be running avast! Antivirus, but I see McAfee Security Scan in your uninstall list. It is never wise to have 2 Antivirus programs on board. If McAfee is an outdated or old installation please uninstall using add/remove programs.

I also highly recommend uninstalling Coupon Printer for Windows if you do not use it.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Please reply with:-
  • Update on problems
  • New HJT log

Re: Unable to connect to internet after Malware attack

Unread postby eddie57 » January 20th, 2010, 2:27 am

I uninstalled McAfee. I have no idea how it got installed in the first place. Again, this is my parents' comp and they aren't very computer savy. I use CCleaner, MBAM, and Avast! for routine scans and cleaning but thats it. I also installed Ad-Aware but rarely use it. Is there any other programs you reccommend?

The internet is working fine now but my mother encountered another fake security scan/warning today (just one this time). I closed it out and ran a full MBAM scan that found nothing.

I will ask my parents tomorrow if they use "coupon printer for windows". Just curious, why do you reccommend uninstalling it? I also downloaded and ran TFC and a new HJT scan as you asked.

Thanks!

The internet is working fine now but my mother encountered another fake security scan/warning today (just one this time). I closed it out and ran a full MBAM scan that found nothing.

Apart from the internet running fine, is the actual computer running fine.

I will ask my parents tomorrow if they use "coupon printer for windows". Just curious, why do you reccommend uninstalling it?
It is not bad as such BUT does like to collect data and send it home, so if not used it is always recommended to removed. If it is used then by all means keep it.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

To answer your question, yes the whole computer seems to be working fine. I am only on it a few minutes a day but my parents said they haven't noticed any more problems. Here are the requested logs.

Thanks!

Re: Unable to connect to internet after Malware attack

Unread postby muppy03 » January 20th, 2010, 4:58 pm

That all looks really great! Lets just do a couple more things before I say you are “All Clean” :)

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 18.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_15
    Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2_15
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

HostXpert
Download HostXpert from here & save it to your desktop
  • Right click on HostsXpert.zip and select Extract All...
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish
  • Once extracted, HostsXpert folder will open
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to start it
  • On your left hand side, click on Restore MS Hosts File
  • Exit HostsXpert

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Please reply with:-
  • ESET log
  • New HJT log

Re: Unable to connect to internet after Malware attack

It looks really good  so if you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

TFC is a great tool for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

You can delete RSIT from your Desktop and it associated folder C:\RSIT also Host Expert.

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Please reply if you have any problems or questions

Just a couple of questions.
1. Is TFC necessary if I am running CCleaner on a regular basis? Is one better than the other?

2. I can't turn on automatic updates for Windows through the Security Center or through Control Panel->System->Automatic Updates Tab. The option to turn them on is grayed out and I can't check it.

3.Are you allowed to tell me which Anti-virus and Malware programs you run on your personal computer? If so I would like to know.

Thanks!

1. Is TFC necessary if I am running CCleaner on a regular basis? Is one better than the other?

No it is not necessary. Most of the tools we use we ask the poster to uninstall as they are really not suitable to be run without guidance. TFC is one that can be, so that is why I said you could keep if you want. I myself am partial to ATF Cleaner another similar product. It is all users preference. :)

2. I can't turn on automatic updates for Windows through the Security Center or through Control Panel->System->Automatic Updates Tab. The option to turn them on is grayed out and I can't check it.

Lets check it has not been disabled first.
Click Start then Run
In the Run Box type services.msc then click ok.
Scroll down until you find Automatic Updates and double click on it.
A new box should open.
Make sure the Service Status is showing as started then
Check the Start up type is set to automatic.

If the above is not displayed as started and automatic then set it to that then click apply and reboot..

If it is all set correctly let me know and we will go onto something else.

3.Are you allowed to tell me which Anti-virus and Malware programs you run on your personal computer? If so I would like to know.

I use Avira (the free version). I have a very old and underpowered computer and I find it great for my needs. Again Anti Virus can come down to users choice. Just make sure you have at least one updated and running. It is important to remember that NO Antivirus or Antispyware program will protect you from everything out there. One of the absolute best things to do in conjunction with an updated AV is be wary. Think about what site you are visiting or what you are downloading, double check if necessary. Don’t automatically click the link in an email you have just received, even if it is from a friend. (What if there computer is infected and sending out emails.)
