Sorry, I don't recall running RSIT before. I don't see it in past instructions. Please advise.
I am currently running Malwarebytes. McAfee is saying that it removed FakeAlertFQ while Malwarebytes is running. I will post the Malwarebytes log and wait for RSIT instructions.
Thanks!

 Very sorry about that! Instruction below and there will be 2 logs.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Looks ok, What MBAM found is in the System Restore and will be cleaned when we finished. Have you experienced any more pop ups or is the computer having problems?

If not lets continue on with what I posted previously.

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 17.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
    Java(TM) 6 Update 16
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Re: XP infected with trojan.dnschanger rootkit.tdss rogue.smartp

Unread postby TOML » January 14th, 2010, 5:28 am

Hi, the Adobe and Java Runtime installs went well. Java is now at update 18. I ran the TFC Tool whcih did a reboot as you said it may. No problems. I also ran ESET tool after diabling McAfee. There shows one error. Don't know if it is from one of the tools or a real threat. Didn't get to run much on the system but it does seem to be stable. Here are the logs.
Thanks!

Ok looking way better. Any problems at all? Lets get rid of what ESET found and if no problems we will clean up.

Download and Run OTM.exe

Download OTM.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
:Files
C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE

:Commands

[EmptyTemp]
 [Start Explorer]
[Reboot]

  • Return to OTM.exe, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM.exe

Please reply with:-
  • OTM log
  • New HJT log
  • Update on any problems remaining

Hello,
System has been stable although not as busy as usual. I loaded OTM and copied commands as instructed. I thought I hit move it. It started logging items and said it had to reboot to finish removing items. I said O.K. When the system came back after boot, I got a log. OTM did not restart with anything in the red box. I started OTM and it was empty so I shut it down. Here is the log and a new HJT.
All processes killed

Logs look good and since you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and TFC are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Image

The above procedure will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Hi,
I can't seem to find Combofix. It seems to have disappeared. I did run OTM with no problems. It asked to reboot as a final step. Everything is running fine. If you think I need to do anything else for Combofix let me know. I diod install winpatrol. Do yopu advise that I remove superantispyware? I have not used it since Jan 2 before I opened the problem. I will keep Malwarebytes.

I can't seem to find Combofix. It seems to have disappeared

Did you run the Combofix Uninstall instructions?

I did run OTM with no problems

OTM would have cleaned up Combofix, that is why you cannot find it. I would like you to manually flush your restore points{see below for instructions) as this step would not have been done if the uninstall Combofix instructions were not done.

Do you advise that I remove superantispyware? I have not used it since Jan 2 before I opened the problem.

Personally I do not think it is needed and would uninstall.
I will keep Malwarebytes.

Excellent :thumbright:

Please create a new Restore Point
To to this
  • Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore
  • Choose the Create a restore point option then click on next
  • You can name your restore point something like All clean then select create
  • Once the Restore Point has been created you can hit close

Since we have created a New and Clean Restore Point, I would like you to remove all the Old Restore Points as some of these are infected and if used would re-infect your computer.

To do this
  • Click Start then click on My Computer Right Click Local Disk c:then select Properties
  • Click on Disk Cleanup a box shall open scanning you files. This could take a few minutes.
  • Once the scan is complete another window will appear. Select the More Options Tab
  • Under System Restore select clean up this will remove all System Restore points except for the most recent one. The one we created earlier.
