G'Day Jack&Jill  ,

Yep, I guess I should have waited ... anyway there does appear to be a single restore date, but it is after running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, and after running the OTL - I could attach the screen shot but your system keeps saying "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached." Suffice to say, the restore points are for the 15th Jan 2010, at 5:55am, 11:28am, 11:59am and 12:00pm.

I have been doing some "digging" and found what I think is a back-up of MS Office 2003. I'm not sure though whether it's the OEM. I have the OEM Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 disk and the Dell Inspiron System Software (device drivers, diagnostics and utilities) disk. I did not proceed to complete the restore (as instructed, only to the blue line)

I hope you have some luck trying to sort this one ... :)

Take it easy Jack&Jill,

Hello Ravenous :),

If you have only one restore point, it complicates things a little. Can you please check if there is any other restore points in the earlier months? You can do so by clicking on the < sign beside the month.

Do you have the CD Key or Product Key for the MS Office 2003?

When you run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, you only removed MS Office 2003?

There is no need to attach snapshots as your explanation is good enough for me to understand. The forum limits the size of files for attachment, that is why you got the message.

Hi Jack&Jill,

There is only one restore point.

I do not have the CD or Product Key. The disk I have looks like a copy my "ex" may have made, but without having made a note of the key.

If you recall, from an earlier post I mentioned that there were a large number of programs flagged by the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, so MS Office was not the only one removed. I did attempt to attach the list but MWR file size restrictions prevented this.

Next time be careful how you frame your instructions - there was no indication of the likely risks, and no detailed instruction of what to look-out for, just a general "have a try" (and see what happens). If I had realised the potential for harm I would definitely not have used the clean-up utility, and certainly not without conferring with you first. Please forgive me, I do not wish to seem ungrateful - you are being so generous helping me - you need to bear in mind that I am not much of a PC techo (I did mention this in one of my earlier posts).

Thanks,

Ravenous ;)

Can you please browse and check it out to confirm whether it is the Office installer package that you have? This will determine the approach I am going to use.

No problem and my apologies as well. Accidents do happen, but I will do my best to help you out of it.

Hi Jack&Jill,

Thanks for being so sympathetic - I appreciate it :) .

The disk does appear to be some kind of "installer" - it even has a text document that has what looks like product key data as follows:

Office 2003 Pro - <<Removed by Admin>>.

The directory structure looks like this:

- folder: 2003 Pro
-- subfolder: Files
--- subsubfolders: ACCRT, OWC10, OWC11, PFILES, SETUP, WINDOWS
- folder: MSDE2000

Hello Ravenous :),

You must not post confidential information such as the Product Key in public forums like this. If leaked, your MS Office might be blocked. I have taken all the measures to minimize the exposure time, so hopefully it is enough.

Create a restore point
  • Click Start on the Taskbar and go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
  • On the right side of the System Restore, check on Create a restore point and press Next>.
  • Type a description and press Create.
  • Click on Close to finish.

Restore from ERUNT
  • Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking My Computer on the desktop and selecting Explore.
  • Go to C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT. There will be a folder dated 13 January 2010 (approximately, due to our time difference).
  • Enter the folder and double click on ERDNT.EXE. Proceed according to the prompts and ERUNT will restore the registry.
  • Reboot if prompted.

Please post a new uninstall list.

Is your MS Office working now?

Please post back:
1. new uninstall list
2. the answer to my question about MS Office

G'day Jack&Jill,

Sorry about the product key - I thought it would be pertinent as proof that I did indeed have a legitimate and working backup, and didn't realise that it's visibility would contravene proprietary laws. Thanks very much for sorting this out and removing the offending item  .

I still cannot see any of the MS Office stuff - no Word, no Excel.

What location? On the desktop? The MS Office is already present in the last uninstall list.

Hello Ravenous :),

I guess we need to do a repair install with the disk you have. The methods are outlined in the MS article here. Proceed accordingly and you should be able to get the MS Office back up.

Run OTL
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Make sure all the Use SafeList options is checked (ticked). There are six of them.
  • Check Scan All Users.
  • At the lower right corner, check LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner. This might take a while.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open. Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply. One log per reply please.
Note: These files are saved as OTL.txt and Extras.txt on the desktop.

Please post back:
1. how did the repair install of MS Office go?
2. the OTL logs (OTL.txt and Extras.txt)

Hi Jack&Jill,

Got the following message when attempting to repair:

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exits and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

I think what we should do at this point is ignore the MS Office problem - I can re-install from the original back-up disk at a later stage. We should re-focus our attention on the main problem; why my C:\WINDOWS directory is over 60Gig. Is this acceptable Jack&Jill? :)

Re: WINDOWS Directory is over 60Gig (& slow start-up/performce,)

Unread postby Jack&Jill » January 20th, 2010, 12:39 pm

Hello Ravenous :),

I think what we should do at this point is ignore the MS Office problem - I can re-install from the original back-up disk at a later stage. We should re-focus our attention on the main problem; why my C:\WINDOWS directory is over 60Gig. Is this acceptable Jack&Jill? :)
It is OK for me, thus I will leave it to you to work out the MS Office reinstall.

Open up ERUNT and backup your registry.

Fix with OTL
  • Please disable your real time protection of any Antivirus, Antispyware or Antimalware programs temporarily. They will interfere and may cause unexpected results.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the following text into the white box below Custom Scans/Fixes:
    Code: Select all

  • Click Run Fix.
  • Please post the contents of the fix log file back here if you are prompted to open the file. It can also be found at C:\_OTL\Moved Files as MMDDYYY_HHMMSS.log where MMDDYYY is date format and HHMMSS is time format.
  • If requested to reboot, please do so. The log file will open after restart.
  • Enable back your security softwares as soon as you completed the OTL fix steps.

Re: WINDOWS Directory is over 60Gig (& slow start-up/performce,)

Unread postby Ravenous » January 20th, 2010, 6:20 pm

Hi Jack&Jill,

I don't know whether thisw may be relevant, but just out of sheer desperation I decided to try and open a pre-exiting MS Word document, and guess what ... MS Office Word opened up. I did this for an Excel document and Excel opened up. They still don't appear on the Desktop, or from Start, All Programs, but they appear to be functioning when invoked by way of an exiting "*.doc" or "*.xls" file.

Also, I noticed that my Windows Live Mail Desktop icon keeps changing from it's normal display format to the "plain-jane" standard non-de-script Windows icon.

Is any of the above pertinent to our problem?

Ravenous

Hello Ravenous :),

Remove orphaned Windows installer files
  • Go to Start > Run.... Copy and paste the following text into the white box:
    Code: Select all
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap.exe" G!
  • Click OK. A command prompt window will open and the operation will commence.

Do an online scan with ESET Online Scanner.
Please be patient as scanning will take quite some time. If you have problem running the scan, you might want to disable any real time protection that you have.
  • Click here to go to ESET Online Scanner page.
  • Click on ESET Online Scanner. A new window will open.
For FireFox user, you will need to download and install esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe. Click on it and save the file to a convenient location. Double click on it to install and a new window will open.
  • After reading through the Terms of Use, check YES, I accept the Terms of Use and click Start to begin scan.
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX Control from ESET. Please install.
  • At the Computer scan settings section, uncheck (untick) Remove found threats and then check Scan archives.
  • Now, click on Advanced settings and make sure all these are checked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Click on Scan to proceed.
  • Click Finish and close the window.
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner using Windows Explorer and look for log.txt.
  • Post the contents of log.txt in your reply.

Please post back:
1. still having disk space issue?
2. ESET online scan report

Yeehaa Jack&Jill  ,

On the money with this one man ... good onya!

C:\WINDOWS directory now only 5.36G.

Freespace is 68.4G.

Thank you so much - excellent work.

Can you explain how you did it? What was taking up all that space?

Also ...

I don't know whether this may be relevant, but just out of sheer desperation I decided to try and open a pre-exiting MS Word document, and guess what ... MS Office Word opened up. I did this for an Excel document and Excel opened up. They still don't appear on the Desktop, or from "Start, All Programs", but they appear to be functioning when invoked by way of an exiting "*.doc" or "*.xls" file.

Also, I noticed that my Windows Live Mail Desktop icon keeps changing from it's normal display format to the "plain-jane" standard non-de-script Windows icon.

Is any of the above pertinent to our original problem with the Windows directory?

I was intending to substitute McAfee for Trend Micro; would you recommend this? Do you have any other suggestions (I noticed that you have a section on "Recommended software")? What do you use?

Again, thank you so much for solving this problem, for your patience with me, and for the many new tools and helpful websites that you have introduced me to.

Ravenous :D
