Welcome to the forum. I am checking your log now and will return as soon as I have researched all the items.

While we are working together, please ....
  • Reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • If you are unsure of what to do, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Be patient. HijackThis logs take some time to research.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues: This may or may not, solve other issues you may have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. (Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.)
  • The process may take considerable time.

Hi valdestana and welcome to MWR

Please print these instructions out for easy reference.

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

    PIB.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

    TBPS

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) owner ... (C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\PIB.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u toolbar.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: &Search Toolbar - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe /boot
O18 - Protocol: tpro - {FF76A5DA-6158-4439-99FF-EDC1B3FE100C} - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll
O23 - Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe

===============
Can you tell me if DAP... whether its the free version or the paid for version, If its the free version... uninstall it and fix these lines below as well

O2 - BHO: DAPBHO Class - {0096CC0A-623C-4829-AD9C-19AF0DC9D8FE} - C:\Program Files\DAP\DAPIEBar.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie.htm

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Using Windows Explorer locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from 'Safe Mode'

===============

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

================

Post back a new HJT log, and let me know how everything goes.

Thanks for that. Yes, the DAP programme is the free version.

I will give this a go and post back. Thanks a lot for this.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried this for some time yesterday and found that when I reached the point when I ran HJT to click on "config", followed by click "misc tools" and then "Open process manager" I found that I located the relevant files but when highlighting them all and hitting "kill process" I got a message stating:

"Selected processes could not be killed. It may have already closed or it may be protected by windows" (maybe not exact words but very close)

I could select and get rid of each file one by one but, on hitting "refresh" they all reappeared. I tried this a number of times and this recurred.

It is possible I did something wrong in attempting this method? I wasn't quite sure what you meant by "open a command prompt"?

This is the new HJT log as of today:

Hi valdestana

It is possible I did something wrong in attempting this method?

You havn't done anything wrong regarding the previous fix, your doing very well so far

Regarding the command prompt there is a easy way how to do it later in the next fix.

===============

Please disable Spyware Doctor to prevent it from interfering with the fixes that we are going to be doing. Take particular care to be certain OnGuard real-time blocking is disabled.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

TBPS

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

-

Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) owner ... (C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\tbps.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\PIB.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u toolbar.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Search Toolbar - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe /boot
O23 - Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

If any problems occur again try the fix again in safe mode.
===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Hi Fiona

Thank you for the prompt response. I started the process again and stopped once I reached the early bit about:

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

TBPS

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software
.

I could not find anything called TBPS but there is something called "Websearch Toolbar"-could this be the same thing?

I recall that when rebooting in safe mode over the weekend I did find a whole folder called Toolbar which had something called TBPS and PIB in within it but these do not seem to appear from the ADD/REMOVE programmes option from normal mode.

Would be most grateful for advice on this point before resuming the attempt.

Hi valdestana

Thanks for your reply.

I could not find anything called TBPS but there is something called "Websearch Toolbar"-could this be the same thing?

I'll have to investigate that area further, for the mean time i'd advise you to leave it.

Also I'd advise you to continue with the last instructions I gave, then we will take it from there on what next to do.

Also can you tell me if yourself or a member of your family install the Websearch Toolbar for any reason? Thanks.

Hi Fiona

I don't think I have ever installed anything called Websearch toolbar. My son and his friends, and their friends' friends have had access quite often, so it is possible something like this might have been downloaded by one of them.

Thanks again for your assistance,

Hi valdestana

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Read this instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about something

===============
Open Spyware Doctor
Click on the 'Settings' button on the left hand panel
Then click on the 'Startup Settings' under 'Pick a Category'
Uncheck the box on the right that says 'Run at Windows Startup'

Next i need you to turn off Ewido guard by following the below instructions:

To turn the Ewido Guard off:

Right mouse click on the icon

select Shutdown guard

It will ask you are you sure

Select Yes

That will turn it off

Now i need you to follow the below instructions:

1. Restart your computer. As your computer restarts, repeatedly press the F8 key on your keyboard until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
2. Use the arrow key to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
3. Use an arrow key to select an operating system and press ENTER.
4. When prompted whether you want your Windows to run in safe mode, click Yes.

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Websearch Toolbar
Win-Tools Easy Installer

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Next i need you to follow the instructions below:

Click Start>Run. Type in regsvr32 /u toolbar.dll then hit Enter.

This should un-register the .dll file.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Search Toolbar - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
O23 - Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present.

folders...

C:\Program Files\Toolbar

Reboot back in to normal mode when finished.

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Thanks

Hi Fiona,

Apologies for lack of a response due largely to work pressures this week.

I did what you suggested, last weekend and found that:

1 I ensured Spyware Doctor was turned off as suggested and unistalled Ewido Guard

2 I rebooted into Safe Mode

3 I uninstalled Websearch Toolbar using Add/Remove programmes but could not locate Win-Tools Easy Installer

4 I did Start>Run regsver32 /u toolbar.dll but did not locate anything

5 I did as suggested with HJT

6 I found many entries of C:\Program Files\Toolbar and tried to delete

This is the recent HJT scan just run:

I did not post back straight away as I had intended trying again and, in particular, looking more closely at what is present when in Safe Mode but as stated above, I simply have not had time this week yet.
I don't feel we are quite there but I very much appreciate your help so far.
