Search Engines Not Working

Unread postby triplejjjay » November 18th, 2009, 10:21 pm

Hello everyone. Hope you can help. It is awesome that there are sites like this available to provide assistance.

Our problem is that all search engines have been disabled. Everything else seems to be working fine, and there has been no noticeable reduction in the computers' speed. It is operating on Windows XP SP3.

We mostly use Mozilla Firefox. I did have the Google toolbar installed on both Firefox and IE, but just finished deleting them after reading that they may be a target. The following HiJackThis scan was done afterwards.

Re: Search Engines Not Working

Unread postby deltalima » November 28th, 2009, 11:04 am

Hi triplejjjay,

You say
Our problem is that all search engines have been disabled

Could you please explain the problem in more details, what happens when you type www.google.com into the address bar? What error messages do you see?

REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 4.12.6

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.

In either Internet Explorer 6, or Mozilla Firefox 2, when you either click on a short cut to Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask etc, or type the website address in, we get the following messages:

Interner Explorer -

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click "Diagnose Connection Problems..."

Other options to try:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

Firefox -

!
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Try Again

As I mentioned previously, everything else concerning the internet works fine, as well as e-mail.

Thanks for now.

Update!!!!

I downloaded Microsoft Defender this afternoon, and ran a 'quick scan'.

It found the following file: SettingsModifier:Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack

It classified it as a medium level alert, and asked me what to do with it. I selected 'remove'.

Guess what!!!!

Problem fixed - all search engines now working!

I am going to take your advice, and remove the Lime Wire program, once I break the news to my daughter. Myself, I do not even know how to use it, but did suspect it to be the problem, and had her stop using it when this issue started.

Thanks for your help to this point. Do you consider this thread to be closed? let me know if there is anything you want me to follow up on.

Thanks.

Hi triplejjjay,

Good to hear that Microsoft Defender resolved your problem, we can still do a thorough check-up to make sure that your system is completely clean.

In view of the fact that Limewire has been used there is a strong chance that some other Malware remains on the computer. If you wish to continue then please run the scans from my last post (RSIT and GMER) and post the logs here
