I have a problem with USB flash drives. Whenever I insert a USB flash drive, the autorun.exe keeps appearing. If I try to delete it, McAfee reports that it detected a virus, Generic!atr and proceeded to delete the infected file, autorun.inf. After a few seconds, autorun.exe reappears and the process will start again when I delete autorun.exe (autorun.exe has HIDDEN attribute).
I disabled Autorun / Autoplay of attached devices (flash drives, CD/DVD, external drives) 1 week before the problem started and disabled a number of Services with known security risks 3 weeks ago. The problem started just 2 days ago. McAfee doesn't detect a virus during a Full System Scan with all my USB flash drives / external drives connected. It only detects the Generic!atr when I delete autorun.exe. I even re-formatted my USB flash drives in the hopes of erasing any trace of the malware; autorun.exe still reappears after a fresh re-format.
Btw, this only affects USB flash drives; the external hard disk is not affected (so far!). I also have no problems (so far) with system performance even if the USB flash drives are inserted (it is just annoying to have McAfee report the detection).
