vmlib.exe

Unread postby jokeman09 » November 5th, 2009, 4:39 pm

Hi there.

I have something on my computer called "VMLIB.EXE".
Looking around on the web, it appears that this may be some type of virus. Any help to remove it would be appreciated.
The computer seems to be running slower than usual, sometimes even to a crawl. This also seems to happen even when offline. I have cleaned the temp. internet files, defragged, scan disk, and tried to eliminate unneeded software. All major programs are updated.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

1. Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

2. Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

3. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall list
  • MBAM log
  • NEW HJT log

Re: vmlib.exe

Per the prior instructions, I am asking questions before going on.

I have the Hijack This Uninstall log ready to send, however the next step is a problem.

For some reason, Spybot has completely disappeared. I looked on the start menu, C:\programfiles, add/remove programs, and it's just gone. I see it in the Hijack this log. I rebooted, logged on to the different account (which is not the admin. acct.).

I remember now that this happened a few weeks ago where it was missing after having been on this computer for quite some time. I reinstalled it at that time. Perhaps a virus or something is removing it?

What would you like me to do next?

Thanks

Uncheck and Delete everything you find in there. (Except for "My Current Home Page.")

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

Hi, How is the computer running now?

Do you know what this is?

    MP10_EnsureFileVer

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser,To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Hello again.

The computer is running better/faster. Per my son (it's his computer), prior to our work here, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the fastest, it was a 3. Now with the work we have done he feels it is about a 6 out of 10. This may be as fast as it gets considering it only has 512mb of memory. I would put more in, but don't want to pay the outrageous price for Rambus memory.

I do not know what the MP10_EnsureFileVer is. If you feel it is a concern, we can eliminate it and I'll deal with it later if it affects some program.

Here's the Kaspersky log. It appears to be clean:

This may be as fast as it gets considering it only has 512mb of memory

I find that AVG appears to be a bit of a hog with 512mb or less. I ended changing to AVIRA, so that is something to consider, choice is yours. I shall post the Avira link in case you wish to give it a try, it might be worth it in your case. Make sure you uninstall AVG first. You only need one Antivirus running.

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
Please note the following if you decide on Antivir Personal Edition
Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus is only available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

This next step is your choice. The below items I am getting you to fix with HJT are for programs that do not need to start up when you turn your computer on. Doing the below step WILL NOT UNINSTALL these programs ONLY stop them from running at startup. All will be available when you need them. The bonus is it will make your startup time a bit shorter and hopefully the computer a bit faster.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] "nwiz.exe" /install
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AppleSyncNotifier] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleSyncNotifier.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MP10_EnsureFileVer] C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe /EnsureFileVersions
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Once the above is done, post a final HJT and another update.

Hi.

I might have commited a sin......I liked your advice to switch from AVG to Avira, and not thinking, I went ahead and attempted to do it. I was just going in sequence with your instructions, not remembering that at the beginning you asked me to not install/uninstall any program. Then to top it off, the Avira has some sort of updating issue and would not update. (I tried twice). This was being discussed on the web that Avira is working on it. So I then uninstalled it, and reinstalled a new version of AVG because I didn't want to be unprotected.
I hope I didn't leave a mess with all of the things you have been working on.

The computer seems to be working the same as the last post. I was really hoping to try the Avira. Perhaps when they get their updates fixed I can switch. I hate to install and uninstall programs like that. I'm sure they leave garbage behind!

A point to note: when I was working on the Avira/AVG, it required a few reboots. On one of the reboots, and only one, Ad-Aware decided to load in the task bar. It hasn't loaded since and wasn't loading before. Do you think, when we are done, that I should uninstall ad-aware and reinstall it? It seems strange that it would randomly load.

OK, I checked all of the items you suggested in HJT and clicked Fix Checked.

Here is the new HJT log:

No sin, that’s why I gave you the link. :)

I still think it will be a better option for you than AVG. Another good, free and popular one is AVAST

2) avast! 4.8 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

I hate to install and uninstall programs like that. I'm sure they leave garbage behind!

Yes they do like to do that. If you decide to uninstall Avg again, uninstall from add/remove programs then run the AVG uninstaller. This will remove the leftovers.

AVG Removal Tool

Download and save AVG Removal Tool to your desktop

Run it to remove AVG. After this, please restart your computer.

Ad-Aware decided to load in the task bar. It hasn't loaded since and wasn't loading before. Do you think, when we are done, that I should uninstall ad-aware and reinstall it? It seems strange that it would randomly load.

Your log shows it as up and running?

Also I would not start up Teatimer again, as this will also cause slow downs with the amount of RAM you have.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Other than that the logs looks good, so if you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

Remove Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK ( please note the space between Combofix and the /, it is needed.)
  • Image
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Please reply if you have any problems or questions

Hi again.

OK just a couple of things.

Where I noted above that AdAware loaded in the task bar, I should have said in the system tray. Again it is not loading. The program is in my program folder. Do you recommend that I uninstall AdAware and reinstall it? Or should I leave it off all together?

You mentioned to not start the Teatimer. I still see no signs of Spybot on this computer anymore. Is that a recommended program, or should I leave it off?

Regarding the MVPS Hosts File. What do I see when I try to connect to one of the well known ad sites? Is there already a Hosts File on my computer, and this one is just better?

Was the vmlib.exe indeed a virus? If so, what type of virus was it, and what does that type of virus do to the computer?

Any trick to getting the Avira antivirus to update? I would really like to run it, but it seems that it has a long history of update problems.

Once again, thanks for all of your help. You guys are the best.

You can try a reinstall if you like. After you uninstall run ATF, before reinstalling. If you are happy with the program, then by all means have it working.

Spybot is quite a popular program. I do not use it or Adaware myself. Teatimer is a function of Spybot, and that is what I do not think you need to have running since you are low on RAM an are having speed issuses.

It is a list of sites that have already been confirmed as not of the best nature. If you try to go somewhere that is on the list the Host file prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. Please note that this is a recommendation only by no means is it compulsory. Have a read of the tutorial, then see if it is something you would like to try.

It was a Trojan. More info Here

I use Avira and it updates daily and usually without any problems. The odd time it has failed I just click on the manual update tab, and it has done it without any issues. Did you try a manual update?
