Performed a DIY removal of Malware (oops) - was I successful

Unread postby chet_nalewajek » November 1st, 2009, 4:08 pm

I was infected with the Dealio Toolbar and all of its related malware. I posted the problem to this site (see original post at http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 12&t=46982) and instead of waiting for a helper I attempted to remove it on my own. I have been in communication with a site administrator (NonSuch) and he advised me to NEVER DO THAT AGAIN and that I have should have a helper review my work to ensure that I have actually fixed this problem. I respectfully ask (with tail between my legs) for some help with this matter  . Here is an updated HiJackThis log:

Hi chet_nalewajek,

-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check this entry:

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: FcblelhaWmp - {10BD46D0-B5C5-4D9E-83BA-1DD017FA8DBE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fcblelha.dll

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2009-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

So we are looking for the log from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and a new HiJackThis log.

chet_nalewajek,
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, select View, Details, highlight the listed file only, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.
C:\Windows\System32\fcblelha.dll
If you have any problem deleting the file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Please Note if you cannot delete or find.
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected

If you use Firefox,
Click Firefox in the top bar, and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera,
Click Opera in the top bar, and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit from the Main window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Let me know how it goes, and please post the Installed programs list from HiJackThis.

Hi again askey127.

1. I was not able to find the file c:\windows\sysem32\fcblelha.dll in that directory or anywhere for that matter. I assume it was deleted when I ran the fix earlier.

2. I ran the Norton Uninstaller which seemed to be successful in deleting Norton LiveUpdate, et al. I do still have a trial version of Norton Utilities 14 - was thinking of purchasing it at some point. What is your opinion of this product?

3. Also have been getting an error at startup. After sending a report to MicroSoft I am advised that my display adapter does not support DirectX 9. Should I attempt to update the drivers?

4. Here is the HJT UnInstall list. You will find a reference to UFT FoxStart ..., a program which is no longer installed. I would like to remove this reference but will wait untill instructed to do so. Also dislike having Bounjor and Apple Mobile Device Services but welcome to iTunes!

chet_nalewajek,
Norton Utilities is an "OK" application, but the functions can be done well with competent free applications.
Have a look at JKDefrag for detailed defrag service, and Winpatrol for easy control of startups and services.
Basically, you shouldn't use any registry cleaner. no matter who makes it. The perfect ones don't really do much of anything, and a buggy one can permanently break your system.

Let's get rid of any malware that could be lurking in earlier System Restore files:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

I think you are good to go.

Thank you for all your help. Just a few final questions/comments please:

1. I had forgotten all about "Scotty" - I have downloaded and am now running WinPatrol! Combined with my Avast anti-virus I am basically safe or is there more?

2. I was interested in Norton Utilities strictly for it's registry cleaning properties. As you've indicated that no registry cleaning program is really safe I will no longer be needing it and would like to uninstall it. This bring me to my next question - What is the best and most reliable way to remove a program and all it's components? (note: I also have the Windows Install Cleanup utility).

3. What is the difference between Windows Clean-up Manager and ATF Cleaner? It would appear that they perform the same function but ATF cleans more stuff?

4. I'm not sure if you had access to my complete unedited original post under this forum but I used ComboFix without guidance (oops) DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME PEOPLE! Several files were quarantined in the directory "Qoobox". Can I delete this directory?

5. Last comment, I assume askey127 translates to ascii 127 (to delete or rub out) and if so, very clever handle!! (I named my restore point askey127 - lol)

I await your reply.

Thanks again,

Chet

chet_nalewajek,
My best short answers:
1) You should be OK with those.
2)The CCleaner registry button is fairly safe for selective removals, but always be sure to save the backup in case.
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download the CCleaner Installer from here . Choose the Slim version. You can save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
You can now delete the installer ccsetupxxx_slim.exe from your desktop.

3)ATF-Cleaner and CCleaner are both more aggressive, and don't bother you with computing the compacted files nonsense.
4) You can delete the \Qoobox\ directory
5) That was the reason for the handle. Couldn't think of anything else at the time.
Thanks.

Hey Askey127,

CCleaner seems like a handy tool - will give it a shot.

Thanks again for all your help and happy Malware hunting (and deleting/rubbing out)!!
