file in the recycle bin will not delete

Unread postby chunkeyman » October 23rd, 2009, 8:33 am

Hi

My problem is that a file in the recycle bin will not delete.
I have used safeboot and removed recycler(in all drives) but the file still shows and will not delete.
The icon on desk top shows items to be deleted but shows nothing when I open the recycle bin.
The only way I can see the file is by looking in 'c' drive while the 'hidden files' and 'protected operating systems' are open to view.
I have run all the usual spyware progs, Malawarebites, spybot,Super antispyware etc etc but nothing shows. I also ran CCleaner before the Hijack log was made.

Can you please advise how I might possibly solve this problem.

I have run Hijack this and the report is below.

Thanking you in advance.

Unread postby peku006 » October 27th, 2009, 5:21 am

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • If you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

1 - download and run RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

2 - Status Check
Please reply with

the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)

Thanks peku006

Hi

I have run the RSIT prog but do not understand the 2 files that you want. RSIT made a notepad file which I have attached but I'm not sure where the 'info.txt' file is shown. If you could explain further please.

Thanks

Colin

Re: file in the recycle bin will not delete

Unread postby peku006 » October 27th, 2009, 8:30 am

Hi chunkeyman

I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

µTorrent
LimeWire

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them. Please remove it before we can continue any further. Post back when you have done it so we can continue the cleaning process.

NOTE: Even if you are using a safe P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply

Hi chunkeyman

1 - Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2 - Status Check

Hi chunkeyman

1 - Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

2 - Clean temp files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

For Technical Support double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3 - Kaspersky Online Scan

  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

5 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Kaspersky online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log
How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Re: file in the recycle bin will not delete

Unread postby chunkeyman » October 27th, 2009, 4:30 pm

Hi

Attached are the reports requested.

I still have the problem. The desk top icon for 'recycle bin' indicates that there is something to recycle. When I open the bin there aren't any files showing to delete. I am still offered the icon 'Empty Recycle Bin'. If I choose to empty the bin, it asks 'do you wish to delete these 4 items?'. If I click yes, it shows 'recycle bin cannot delete dd1: access denied'. If I look at recycler in both drives with 'show hidden files' and 'hide protected operating systems' unchecked, it shows a file 'S-1-5-21-1177238915-1935655697-839522115-1004' which had been created when I started the delete process.

I am now wondering if this is a 'Malware' problem. I can't think of anything else that has changed on my pc to cause this problem other than 'Malware'.

Hope you can offer some sort of a solution.

regards

Colin

Hello

The problems you are still experiencing are not coming from malware as all of your latest logs have come back clean.
those 4 items ......where they are and what names they have

Did you set this restrictions yourself using Spybot or some other tool?

Hi

The item

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

I would not have set the restriction myself as I would not have known what I was doing or the end result of such an item.
After running 'spybot' I get requests that 'spybot ' has asked for a change to be made....as it is 'spybot' asking I always agree to whatever changes it suggests. Is this 'policies' item incorrect?

I think I have solved my problem but don't know why. I suspect I had a DVD file that had been corrupted and when I tried to delete (a copy) of that file only, the problem occured with the recycle bin. I have now deleted the file (original and copy) completely with the help of 'unlocker', although the items would only completely clear on reboot. I have tried deleting other items from both drives and not had the same problems hence my deduction on a corrupted file.

regards

Hi Colin

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

Delete RSIT from your desktop, also delete this folder C:\rsit.

General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

  • Clear Infected System Restore Points
    • Turn System Restore off
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
      Restart your computer
    • Turn System Restore on
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis
  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
  • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector or F-secure Health Check. I suggest that you run one of them at least once a month.
  • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

  • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE. Here are two tutorials: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide.
  • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead: Firefox or Opera

Here is a great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware.

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
