Need help with browser hijacker

Unread postby rg6 » October 2nd, 2009, 8:51 am

I apparently have a browser hijacker. I use Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3, but the problem also occurred when I tried IE7. I am regularly suffering from (1) 404 errors, (2) links being redirected to unknown pages (3) favicon changes on the bookmark toolbar (4) inability to open Google Calendar due to redirection error and (5) a Firefox warning that something out of the ordinary is happening asking if I want to "get out of here" (which I have not always heeded, but now do).

Generally, if I restart my computer the problem goes away for a while. This is not always true. The Hijackthis log file below was created just after a restart when things were working well, except one bookmark icon still contained the wrong favicon.

Your help is appreciated!

Re: Need help with browser hijacker

Unread postby deltalima » October 8th, 2009, 7:55 am

Hi rg6,

Please re-open HijackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: PCTools Browser Monitor - {B56A7D7D-6927-48C8-A975-17DF180C71AC} - (no file)

Now close all other open windows and then click on Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Now please leave the PC running until the symptoms you described in your initial post are showing and then run a new HijackThis scan.

While the symptoms are still showing, Download DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

Link1
Link2
Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
  • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log and the new HijackThis log along with DDS.txt and Attach.txt from the DDS scan into your next reply.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
