Pop-ups of doom

Unread postby maarow » September 23rd, 2009, 5:57 am

Hello.

I've got a problem that seems to be gradually escalating. It started with random pop-ups in both Mozilla and Firefox (pop-up blocker is off for both). Next I noticed that every so often if I clicked a link on Google, I would be redirected, usually to some "warning" about the site I was trying to get to being infected or to some malware removal program download page. Most recently and irritatingly, while surfing the web on Firefox, seemingly apropos of nothing, I'll be hit by a rapid-fire barrage of Internet Explorer pop-ups, all for the same web address (although it never loads the page; it always goes to the "Internet Explorer cannot find this site/check connectivity" screen), which appear at the rate of one pop-up a second or more. It makes it impossible to do anything, and I can't stop it without just shutting down the computer. Apart from moments like that, the computer isn't running slowly.

Any help would be appreciated.
