Windows XP Home, SP2

Got the Windows Police Pro virus (desote.exe).
Couldn't boot into Safe mode.
Booted Windows in Normal mode but couldn't run any exe files.
Eventually figured out what process was causing the issue and manually removed it.

From another machine, I Googled for removal instructions.
Per the removal instructions, I ran a program called OTM.com to remove the Windows Police Pro virus.
Per the removal instructions, I ran fixexe_xp.com to reset the exe file association.

Ran Spybot Search & Destroy and removed all found issues.
Ran MalwareBytes and removed all found issues.
Ran Symantec AntiVirus and removed all found issues.
Reran Spybot Search & Destroy and found no issues.
Reran MalwareBytes and found no issues.
Reran Symantec AntiVirus and found no issues.
Ran CHKDSK /F which reported no issues.
Ran CHKDSK /R which reported no issues.

Shutdown machine and restarted in Normal mode. Windows appeared to be working as expected.

Ran HijackThis and created hijackthis.log and startuplist.txt files.
Both the hijackthis.log and startuplist.txt files matched saved versions of these files that were created prior to the virus (see hijackthis.log file below).

Shutdown machine and restart in Safe mode. Stopped with the following error:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I have not installed any new hardware or made any BIOS changes.

One thing I forgot to mention in the original post:
When booting in Safe mode, the last driver displayed before I get the error message is agp440.sys.

HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Please note the following important guidelines

Hi Tom310,

Since you have used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) on your machine, I would like to take a look at the most recent log file.
Open MBAM and click on the Logs tab. Open the file at the bottom of the list and post the contents back here.


Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Before you click "Continue", make sure you change the List files/folders created or modified in the last 3 months
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt in your next reply.

SUMMARY

Please post back with the following :

  • RSIT log
  • MBAM log.
