Hello, my niece Emma got a computer for college two weeks ago and asked me to look at it a couple of days ago as Internet Explorer had stopped launching. The computer is a Packard Bell EasyNote MH36 running Vista Home Premium with SP1. Norton 360 had come pre-loaded but the virus definitions had not been updated. I updated those and ran a full scan which showed up nothing. IE was working intermittently but being hijacked, often to thefeedyard. Because of this I tried downloading and running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. This software claims to identify 28 infections before stopping responding. I read the stickies on here and ran Hijack This with the following results:

Re: Non virus infection - malware? Hijack This log posting

Unread postby Shaba » September 20th, 2009, 4:57 am

Hi Johnnyace

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hello Shaba,

Firstly, thank you for your reply and the information you have given me. I have read the links and there is some good news in that the computer belongs to my niece who got it new only three weeks ago. She has no internet banking or anything of critical confidentiality - the PC was bought for her college work. So a reformat would not lose any important information. Against that, the only disks I have for the machine are Norton 360 v3.0 and MS Office Home & Student 2007. Any other software came pre-installed (OEM?) and will presumably be lost should I reformat.

I am inclined to think - given the history of the PC and it's future use - that removal of the Trojan should be sufficient. Would you be content to help me in doing this or is it imperative that the machine be re-formatted? I haven't turned on or used the infected PC other than to obtain the Hijack This log from it.

Thank you,

Johnnyace

Then we will continue with this:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\Users\Emma\AppData\Roaming\sdra64.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming\84372872az.exe

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Wow, is that it? Cool! 8)

I'm delighted to be able to say that the machine is showing no evidence now of any problems. The error messages on startup have disappeared and the browser is no longer being hijacked.

Thank you so much - I wouldn't have had a clue how to clean that Trojan. You are not only highly intelligent but extremely kind to have given both your knowledge and your time so freely. I'll put the Norton 360 antivirus and firewall back in place and get SP3 downloaded. Shields up!

Again, sincere thanks,
