Restarting DNA/BitTorrent DNA Removal

Unread postby Astracar » September 10th, 2009, 12:36 am

I was unable to reply to the following help posted for me:

1. IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

DNA
BitTorrent DNA

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

2. Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

* Start HijackThis
* Click on the Config button
* Click on the Misc Tools button
* Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
* Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply along with a New HJT log.

Please reply with:-

* Uninstall List
* New HJT log

I was able to remove DNA but I couldn't find BitTorrent DNA. Here's my logs:

Hello <USERNAME> and welcome to the forums :)

I am turtledove, and will be assisting you with your log.
If you still need assistance, please do the following:

*Print all instructions or Copy to Notepad for reference.
*Please note, unless I'm notified ahead of time, this topic will close if there is not a response in 3 Days.
*Place a link to this thread in your Favorites/Bookmarks for easily returning here.
*Please respond until I give the all clear, as absence of symptoms does NOT always mean Clean.
*Please do not run any other tools/scans unless requested*
**Please be sure you have read the Notice about Peer to Peer File Sharing Programs at the top of this forum**
Link: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112
*If you can do the above all should go well.

**As I am an Undergrad, my responses will be approved by an Expert/Teacher before I post to you; therefore it may take a tad bit more time to reply.
Thanks for your patience.

Since it has been some time since your above post, please post the following logs to be sure nothing has added itself since your last post. I will go over the new logs and return as soon as possible.

Step 1
Please make an Uninstall list :
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step 2
Rerun HijackThis and Save the log.

Post the New HijackThis and the Uninstall list using the Reply button.

Thank you

Hello Astracar,
You're welcome. Please copy/print instructions out for easy reference.
Please give any details you can on how your system is acting, such as pop ups, wrong sites when searching or anything your AntiVirus has mentioned.

Step 1
Download and Run RSIT
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Step 2
Please Download SysProt Antirootkit
you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors.

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box select all items and check Hidden Objects Only at the bottom of the window.
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
  • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

Post
The RSIT log.txt and info.txt
log created by SysProt Scan
Description of computers symptoms

Thank you,

TD

Whenever I log onto the web, my connection runs very slowly. My computer runs programs just fine and I don't have any pop ups (I use Firefox) but a sites advertising will really slow down the connection. Checking my emails can take ten times longer than it used to just because the connection crawls.
When I first loaded Malware, it found several problems and has fixed all but two that refuse to go away:

So, I'm guessing that my computer is now working as a Bot. I keep offline as much as possible and never log into anything sensitive that requires a password.

Hello Astracar,

Thank you for the logs.

Unfortunately, you had a backdoor virus and others; there is infection still.
Due to the Backdoor ability I would do the following immediately:

BACKDOOR TROJAN

Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victims machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, Backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer, change settings on the computer and more. Please read this article by Roger A. Grimes on Remote Access Trojans it will give you an Idea of the severity of the type of infection you have.

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP log in password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a user name and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it

Because of the severity and the capabilities of this type of virus, (it cannot be known what changes to your system it has made or if it opened up other ways into your system) The only responsible course of action I can advise is to reformat your computer and reinstall windows.

Should you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Let me know if you are able to to do a complete full reformat and reinstall of your system. You will need an XP System disc that matches your version of XP, or Recovery Discs from your Computer Manufacturer and other programs discs.

Thank you
