Oh, my.....I am a bit ticked off.... I had a long explanation/request and my internet decided to crap out on me. My connection was working.....GRRRRRRR!!!! Now I have to start over, again mooching off my neighbors access.

I am afraid that is part of the problem. Yesterday I couldn't get on using my wireless router....something popped up about resetting it....no clue what that means or how to do it, so I just clicked cancel. I was able to get on through my neighbor...I know, not kosher, but hey....she should secure it!! Anyway, later I was looking at the Niagra Hilton website, and up popped a note from ESET Smart Security that something was trying to access the internet and it had been quarantined. Freaked me out!! Does quarantine mean it's still on my computer and can wreak havoc?? I'm clueless and in dire need of help :shock: The following is what my quarantine detected threat log says:

My firewall log has several questionable entries (at least to me who, again, admits she is clueless!)
On 9/2/2009 and 6/24/09 Several intances of "Detected covert channel exploit in ICMP packet" What does this mean?
On 6/11-6/18 multiple occurances of "Detected DNS cache poisoning attack" What does this mean?

After spending many many hours searching the internet for what this trojan is and how to fix, I just ended up confusing myself more :-( I'm also worried about the possibility of a keylogger and other nasty stuff on my computer. I do keep my windows updated as well as ESET Smart Security.

Someone -- please help!!!! Thanks a bunch!!!

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while we are fixing this machine.
  • Be sure to use the subscribe button to receive notification by Email that you have been replied to.
    If I do not hear from you in 3 days from my last post this topic will be closed. You will need to start another.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

As your using Vista many tools we use will have to be right clicked on and choose run as administrator . Just keep that in mind.

First off. Once Eset or any other anti virus program quarantines something it's just that Quarantined and safely put away to cause no problems.
What your describing that it finds is a site that is known to have something on it that may hurt your machine and eset has done it's job by protecting you.

On 6/11-6/18 multiple occurances of "Detected DNS cache poisoning attack" What does this mean?

This is your firewall blocking attacks. Some may be false positives. This you would have to take up with Eset.
But mostly your firewall is doing it's job.

Resetting your router.
Let me know what type of router you have and I'll try and help. Although not my forte.
Basically to reset a router you turn it off ( pull the plug) wait 1 minute and turn it back on.

Now to your log.
Nothing nasty in there. But we will look a bit further.

We need to disable windows defender.
A good program but may interfere with our fixes.

Open Windows Defender
Click Tools
Click General Settings
Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
Close Windows Defender


Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

Close that.


Download and install CCleaner from here

If you use either the Firefox/ Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies (using ccleaner) is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.

  • Set Cookie Retention.
    Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
    Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.
    Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button.
    Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".

    Now run the program by clicking on Run Cleaner

    ( Do not use the Registry function to clean anything with this program. Having anything auto clean your registry is risky).

    • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

    Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

    • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

    If you accidently close it you may find it here.
    Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

    In your next reply I would like to see:
    • A new HJT log
    • The report from RSIT
    • The report from Malwarebytes
    • How are things running?
