Tons of IE Windows Popup

Unread postby fltroy » August 20th, 2009, 8:31 pm

Hello, I connected my new computer to my router to set Norton Antivirus online. While doing so, I launched an IE browser. All of a sudden a ton of popups starts coming up connected to the same yahoo page. I had to unplug the ethernet cable to finally get this to stop. Since then, it has also happened to my wife once as well.

I connected Norton and ran a full scan and no issues were found. I installed Spybot Search and Destroy and found no issues either. I am worried that something is hidden evading my scans.

Below is the result of a HiJackThis run.

Thanks for your assistance.

Troy

Hi Troy

Please note: Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click ---> "Run As Administrator"

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Re: Tons of IE Windows Popup

Unread postby melboy » September 4th, 2009, 1:18 pm

Hi Troy.

Do you get the pop-ups all the time, or intermittently? Are they related to a particular site at all? Can you describe them?

Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date.
Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download Adobe Reader 9.1 to your PC's desktop.
  • Uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.0 via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Install the new downloaded updated software.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 15.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 15
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u15-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java: Java(TM) 6 Update 2
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

ATF-Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Malwarbytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
The log can also be found here:
  1. C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  2. Or via the Logs tab when the application is started.
Please post that log back here.

Optionals:

WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ‘spyware’, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it ‘unsolicited’, and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly ‘commercial’. So it does meet the definition for ‘parasite’: unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

I recommend that you uninstall WeatherBug and choose one of these alternatives:

Weather Watcher
or
Get mozilla Firefox and then get FORECASTFOX!!!
or check the weather at these websites:
Weather Street: US Weather
Intellicast
To uninstall WeatherBug:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight WeatherBug Gadget, click Remove.
  4. Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. Before removing it from Add or Remove Programs, there is something we need to do to stop it from being recreated.
  • Open AOL.
  • Go to Help on the toolbar.
  • Select About AOL.
  • Hit Ctrl + D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.
  • You can return to Add or Remove Programs and remove Viewpoint Media Player
. To uninstall the Viewpoint components:.
  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint components, click Remove.
  4. Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
  5. Using Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), search for the Viewpoint components folder. If the program folder is still there, select/highlight the Viewpoint components folder. DELETE it. (File > Delete.) If Windows is not installed on the C drive, replace C:\ with the appropriate drive letter.
  6. Close Windows Explorer.
Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

In your next reply:
  1. Pop-up information
  2. MBAM log.

Please note: Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click ---> "Run As Administrator"

Hi Melboy,

I am still working through your suggestions. I have upgraded Java successfully.

Melboy, you mentioned removing "WeatherBug Gadget" from the Add/Remove Program menu. I have looked several times and I do not see it?

Hope to complete more of your suggestions tonight.

Thanks,
Troy

Hi Troy

Thanks for informing me. :)

Don't worry too much about the WeatherBug issue for now.

Provide the MBAM log and Pop-up information I previously requested, and we'll take it from there.

Due to lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
