Google redirect started it all. Long story short, the "obvious" malware problem (redirection) was "solved" via Malwarebytes/Spybot S& D scans. (Those scans also allowed me to run Task Manager again - which the trojan had revoked admin privileges for). Remaining problems included no HDD showing up in Disk Management and crashes associated with many tasks.

I ran Combofix and that seemed to clear up several problems. Deletions via Combofix included several files with SKYNET prefix (eg, SKYNETkjapppto.dll). That seemed to clear up several problems as well.

Several remain, however. Whether or not they are malware related I do not know, but I suspect so very much.
(1) No HDD show in Disk Management, still.
(2) Frequent BSOD in several scenarios (I can give more details if it'd be helpful)
(3) Apparent inability to successfully install Windows updates
(4) Inability to perform online scans (eg ESET)
(5) There's an svchost.exe running which ultimately will increase PF usage to well over a gig. In order to preserve memory I have to kill it (which doesn't cause a crash) and then it (or its mate) will reappear and then build up PF usage again...
(6) Multiple iexplore.exes running in Task Manager

Thanks much for your attention.

Hello, and Image to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Please do not run anymore tools like ComboFix. These tools could damage your computer if not used properly.

Thanks, Michael

P2P Software

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Kazaa Lite K++ v2.4.3

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P file sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

You must go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you do not wish to remove your P2P programs, please tell me and this topic will be closed. If you do remove the P2P, please continue with the instructions below.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer temporarily

Disable TeaTimer
The Resident TeaTimer tool of Spybot-S&D, may interfere with the fix, so we need to temporarily disable it.
  1. Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  2. Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
  3. Open Spybot S&D
  4. Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  5. Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  6. If your firewall raises a question, say "OK"
  7. Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  8. Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  9. Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Spybot's Tea-Timer is now disabled.

Download and run GMER

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

On your next reply, please post:
  • GMER log
  • RSIT Logs (Log.txt and info.txt)
  • The ComboFix Log (C:\Combofix.txt)

Thank you!

Combo Fix log

Unread postby Limoes » August 21st, 2009, 8:25 am

Michael,

In your last post you asked me to post several logs, including the Combofix log. You didn't ask me to do a Combofix scan, so I'm assuming you were referring to earlier Combofix scan(s)/run(s) which I had done.

I had done two prior to applying here for help; the first seemed to result in some improvements (and showed some file deletions via Combofix), and the second (to my eyes, anyway) showed no changes via that second scan/run.

Unless I hear otherwise from you, then, I will post only logs of those two Combofix scans earlier done (identifying each). I am of course happy to do another scan (and/or to download Combofix under a different name and perform a new scan), but my best bet now is that that is not what you're asking for. Please advise at your earliest convenience, if I've gotten it wrong.

Returning before too long, with the requested items.

Yes, please post both ComboFix logs. If you want, you can post them as attachments because the post may be very long.

Logs posted and attached

Unread postby Limoes » August 21st, 2009, 6:10 pm

Combofix logs (2) attached (zip).

Gmer log and RSIT log and info files all posted, below.

I couldn't "uninstall" Kazaa, but I could and did delete the program files, after which the Add/Remove menu (Control Panel) invited me to take it off that list, which I did.

Thanks.

Seeing as you ran ComboFix a couple of weeks ago, it is most likely out of date by now. Please delete the current version of ComboFix by deleting the ComboFix.exe on your desktop. Once you have deleted that, please download the newest copy from:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
or
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Then continue with the steps below.

Run CFScript

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temp\uiobPjba.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\5bf23d43.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\92c24744.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\dgf0fc7.sys
Folder::
C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite K++
C:\Program Files\uTorrent
c:\documents and settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\uTorrent
Driver::
uiobPjba
5bf23d43
92c24744.sys
dgf0fc7
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
"C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite K++\KazaaLite.kpp"=-
"C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe"=-
RegLock::
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3067556304-433978783-2976231612-1009\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID]

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the ComboFix log on your next reply.

Well, Michael, I don't know how close we are to the end or what tricks my computer may still be up to, but that last run of ComboFix was a proper tonic. For the first time in well over a week Disk Management shows my HDDs! (It's those simple things which give the greatest satsifaction.) Thanks.

The ComboFix log is posted as an attachment, given the following message received on my attempt to post it within this reply proper:

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16 and click on Download button.
  • In the Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Online Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.1.3
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware
  • Click on the Update Tab and click Check for Updates.
  • Once the program has updated, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked Except for the objects located in C:\System Volume Information, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
  • If you ever want to buy Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware Pro, which has real-time protection, please buy it from this link. This site will get some payment, which will help with the server costs.

Please re-run RSIT with the same settings as we had previously. This time, only log.txt will be produced.

Please post the Malwarebyte's log and the new RSIT log.txt

askBar.dll (Ask Toolbar) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_146646.htm
This software is not a virus or a Trojan. It is detected as a "potentially unwanted program" (PUP). PUPs are any piece of software that a reasonably security- or privacy-minded computer user may want to be informed of and, in some cases, remove. PUPs are often made by a legitimate corporate entity for some beneficial purpose, but they alter the security state of the computer on which they are installed, or the privacy posture of the user of the system, such that most users will want to be aware of them.

Ben Edelman (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/?p=858)
I discourage users from running Ask's toolbars for two reasons. First, Ask moves the browser's Address Bar from top-left (where it is found in every browser I've ever seen) to top-right. Ask puts its own search box in the top-left. So Ask's software makes it highly likely that users will accidentally conduct searches when they intend simply to navigate to sites they request by name.

Second, Ask's toolbar leads to landing pages that are objectionable in their own right. Ask's landing pages show ten ads — ten! — above the first organic result. On a 800×600 screen, that means 2 full pages of ads, plus a little bit more after that, all before the first organic result. That's ridiculous. No user deserves that, especially since organic results are safer than sponsored links.

It is advised that you uninstall this program to protect your privacy and computer security and to free up necessary resources. To uninstall the AskToolbar.
  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Ask Toolbar , click Remove.
  4. Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
  5. Using Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), search for the Ask Toolbar folder. If the program folder is still there, select/highlight the Ask Toolbar folder. DELETE it. (File > Delete.) If Windows is not installed on the C drive, replace C:\ with the appropriate drive letter.
  6. Close Windows Explorer.
There is a Video showing how to uninstall a program (Grinler) detailing how to add or remove program in Windows for those who find a visual aid appealing. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

ESET Running Now - In the Interim, a Question

Unread postby Limoes » August 26th, 2009, 9:46 am

ESET is running now and I'll post that result and another HJT scan ASAP, accordingly.

In the interim, however, a question:

While my computer was acting so bizarrely (it seems pretty normal now) Windows update tried to download and install a number of updates, on a number of occasions. The PC kept crashing and the d/loads and installs got mightily fouled up.

Once I've been pronounced "clean", I'll straighten that out and get all up-to-date. However, during this "bizarre period", folders for the windows updates started springing up in all sorts of unexpected places.

These places included on external drives which I had connected at the time.

There is some locking feature on the files and/or folders such that they (or some of them) cannot be (readily/"normally") deleted. [I'm pretty sure that these are "confused" windows update files, tho I suppose I should do an ESET scan to make sure that they are not in fact malware-generated]

The Question, now: Do you know more or less off hand how to delete these unwanted files & folders, or should I inquire on some other board (e.g., a general Windows XP board) ?

Thanks, in advance.

  • Navigate to the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt

Do you know what this file is?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20090417-202003.backup

Do you backup your hosts file? Is this file your current hosts file or just a backup? Which hosts file do you use?

Please post the results from the Virustotal and the answer to the hosts file question.
