Hi John,

Apologies for the delay...

There’s not much showing in the log, but a few items, let’s fix those and see how the pc responds.

We need to stop some Windows Processes
- Run HiJackThis then...
  1. Click "Config..." button
  2. Click "Misc Tools" button
  3. Click "Open process manager" button
  4. Highlight the following...

    C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd2.exe
  5. Click "Kill process" button
  6. Click "Refresh". Check to make sure it is not listed
  7. Repeat this step if it remains
Next, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNPSTD2] C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd2.exe
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh log, and please let me know how your PC is acting,
any specific symptoms, etc. Hopefully we will have made some progress! :D

Hi,

Thanks for the swift response. Especially as you worked a 14 hour day. Much appreciated.

I followed the instructions OK. I also installed Zone Alarm so no need to try to sort out the Windows Firewall.

The only problem I have from a user point of view now is the continuous tick-tock noise from the speakers. The USB phone is now working fine on both Skype and VoipBuster.

Please can you take a look at the log below and let me know whether you spot anything.

Hi John,

Sorry the speaker issue is still plaguing you... it doesn't appear to be
malware related, however, as your log now appears clean!
If you have another set of speakers, you could verify that the problem
isn't those. I am not familiar with the hardware for the VOIP, but it is
possible that hardware is to blame...

Regarding the PCs security in the future:
You may wish to read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable
    and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
    (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  3. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
    This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
    If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
    until there are no more critical updates.

  4. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
    You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

  5. Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware.
    You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis
    just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
    settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  7. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
    Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.


Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Hi,

Many thanks for all your work on these problems.

I'll give the owner the good news that his PC is now clear. I have already been working with him and the rest of his family to follow all the guidelines you have suggested for keeping their PCs clear in the future.

FYI - I've been poking around on the internet and the tick-tock problem may be associated with the SoundMax audio device installed on the PC. I've got a few things to try out to attempt to resolve the problem.
