Hi :)

Multiple Anti Virus programs.

You are operating multiple Anti Virus programs on your computer:
    CA Internet Security Suite
    Norton 360

It is NOT safe to have more than one anti-virus installed on a system, and that doing so not only does not provide better protection, it will actually cause additional problems. Anti-virus programs patch into the system kernel. Having more than one anti-virus patching into the system kernel will not only destabilize a system, it can corrupt system files and it WILL cause crashes! You MUST remove all but one anti-virus program.

Uninstall Programs
  • click on start
  • Click on control panel
  • Double click the icon add/remove programs
  • click on the program in the list and click Remove
  • Continue through the list below (one at a time) until all programs have been removed.
  • If something isn't found, please continue with the next entry in the list.
    Norton 360
    Internet Explorer Default Page

Download and run the Norton Removal tool, instructions can be found here. (Step 4)

Fix HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis

    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

GMER log?

Unread postby normnina » August 19th, 2009, 11:48 pm

I followed the instructions for a GMER log and the file saved on my desktop as wpc0fnfk.1.2.D0D17.efw; I'm not able to launch that file? I don't have an .exe file. Since I don't understand a lot of this, I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks!

•If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

Click the image to enlarge it

•In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
◦Sections
◦IAT/EAT
◦Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
◦Show All (don't miss this one)
•Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
•Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
•Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply:

1.Info.txt
2.Log.txt
3.GMER log

Hi

It is your CA security that has renamed the file.

  • Right click on the file wpc0fnfk.1.2.D0D17.efw
  • Rename it to wpc0fnfk.1.2.D0D17.zip Press enter on your keyboard
  • Right click wpc0fnfk.1.2.D0D17.zip
  • choose extract all
  • Follow the prompts from the wizard, clicking Next, then next, then finish. A folder will be created in the same directory containing the GMER log.

  • Post the log in your next reply.

Hi again :)

I followed your instructions for the GMER file and every time I save it to the desktop, the entire first part of the file name changes with .efw. I renamed each file with .zip, but I receive an error message that there are no files to open.

Thank you again for your help!

Re: Suspected Malware - slow responses

Unread postby melboy » August 26th, 2009, 6:28 pm

Hi, normnina.

OTS by Old Timer

Download OTS to your Desktop

  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Please copy and paste the contents into your next reply.

Random Access Memory Advice:

RAM (Random Access Memory) is short term memory that the CPU (Central Processing Unit) can use to decrease the time it takes to read and write data. If the CPU can write or read data from RAM, it does not need to access the computer's hard drive. Adding RAM to a computer generally increases its performance.

Total RAM: 254 MB (23% free)

Though Microsoft claims XP will run with a mere 128 MB installed in my opinion a minimum of 1 GB is far better.

If you wish to upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a small scanner (CrucialScan.exe) which is perfectly safe to download and run. Which will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

In your next reply:
  1. OTS log
  2. A description of any issues other than the slowness, that you think may be malware related. (eg; pop-ups, re-directions when surfing etc)
