WIN32.TDSS.rtk

Unread postby jokeman09 » August 10th, 2009, 2:42 pm

Hi.
When booting up this morning (XP SP3), a number of DOS boxes kept opening up with the words "C:windows/system32/command.com".
I ran my AVG 8.5, Spybot. It came back a few times but now seems to be gone.
The new thing that comes up in scans is "WIN32.TDSS.rtk. I now have Malwarebytes Anti Malware and it keeps finding "Trojan.TDSS". It says that it removes the problems, but when I reboot, it continues to come back.

Also, for what it's worth, I tried to do a System Restore. It showed the restore points, but when I clicked on a restore piont to go back to an earlier day, nothing happens. It's not frozen up, just nothing happens.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi jokeman09

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Shaba, thanks for the help.

I would like to ask a question before we move on.

With rootkit infections, and the repair process that you may have, is there any fool proof way to know that it was all removed? I do use this computer for an occaisional online transaction, and I would not be comfortable if there is a chance that the bug is still there.

That being said, I have read through some of your posts and have full confidence in your knowledge and experience. I would welcome your help if you think it is productive.

For what it's worth, I have taken the infected computer off line and have been using another as I am now.
I see that on the infected computer, the AVG antivirus has ran, and is now reporting a new threat: File C:\System Volume information_retore(BC5C..........) Trojan horse Rootkit-Pakes.L

I would be happy to try to remove the threats if you think it may work. The alternative, which I believe is reformatting, is not something that I look forward to.

Thanks for your help and consideration.

That rootkit is known and doesn't have any components and won't harm online transactions.

Hi there.

At the beginning of the ComboFix scan, an error came up saying to run chkdsk. It seems that ComboFix did that. I don't know the results.

Here's the ComboFix log:

ComboFix 09-08-10.06 - Jerry 08/15/2009 7:42.2.1 - NTFSx86

Besides my account which is the administrator account, there is a guest account which is off.
In other words, yes I did run from the admin account.

Then that should be fine.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Empty this folder:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save
it to desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit to close ATF-Cleaner.

Still problems?

Hi.

I emptied the folders that you mentioned and ran the ATF-Cleaner.
I then rebooted, and am currently running the AVG virus scan. I can run Spybot after that to check for problems.
Other than that, should I just be watching for abnormal behavior.
Is there anything else that I should do to test the computer?

Thanks

Well you can test a bit and report anything abnormal and I will give you final instructions unless something arises :)

Hi.

I hope this isn't a double post. I posted this a while ago and don't see it show up here.

An update on my system:

I ran AVG-Clean
I ran Spybot-Clean

When Spybot completed, AVG put up a Resident Shield Alert:Threat name: Trojan Horse Rootkit Pakes.L
Detected on open.
Process name C:\WINDOWS\system\svchost.exe Process ID 976
It also showed what looked like a registry key with something like C:\system\restore................(sorry I didn't get this one written down before I lost it.)

I tried to have AVG Heal it and then quarantine it but got the message:"The Virus Vault has reached its maximum count limit."
Please advise my next step on that. I think I should be emptying the virus vault, but will wait for your instructions.

Question: Is System Restore cleaned out, or could there still be an infection in there?

Another item.
When I reboot, I get the message "Malwarebytes Anti Malware. MBAM service terminated unexpectedly. See event log for details. I tried to start the program to post a log but I get the following message when I try to start Malware Antibytes: "An error occured. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes' Anti Malware support team. Error code 703 (0,9)

Another question: Did Kaspersky automatically clean out the trojans/infections? I never clicked on anything to tell it to clean/quarantine the viruses. Perhaps that is the Qoobox folder that you had me empty?

Thanks for the help again.
