Google Installer encountered a problem and has to close....

Unread postby ilikellipses » July 28th, 2009, 2:12 pm

Hi,

I posted about my problem with a message that says Google installer has encountered, etc... yesterday. I've been working on the problem for a while and haven't been able to get any anti-malware to run and couldn't even get hijackthis to run.

I finally managed to run hijackthis from safe mode and here is the log:

Hi Ilikellipses,
Sorry for the delay.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, you have a very dangerous infection called W32/Forbot-FG, with "backdoor" capabilities.
This can give remote intruders complete control of your computer, which can include logging key strokes, stealing information, etc.
The safest advice is to do the following immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Call your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *ALL* of your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
Because of the infection's backdoor functionality(i.e., remote control capability), the basic security of your PC is very likely compromised, and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the Windows Operating System. The reason for this is that the infection can make undetectable changes to your security settings, which may enable a re-installation of the infection after the machine is "cleaned" and reconnected to the internet. (This infection can, in effect, leave a "cellar door" unlocked so it can come back later and gain entry).

If you do not have the resources to reinstall your Windows Operating System and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.
These infections are serious enough that removing them without damaging the Windows system is no sure thing. This is your choice to make.
The following articles may be of assistance in your decision: Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

If, after reading the above, you decide you want to attempt cleaning it, proceed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove a Program Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight this Entry, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Spybot S&D

You can re-install Spybot if you wish, but only after we are completely done.
Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine into Normal (preferred if it works) or Safe mode. You don't need Safe Mode with Networking this time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(The SpybotSD line and/or others may be missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [net] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\net.net"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winlogons.exe] C:\Program Files\KGB\winlogons.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcPro7_0_9 -reboot 1
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acrobat Assistant 7.0] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher.lnk = ?
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder(s) shown below, select View, Details, highlight each listed file only, one at a time, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.
C:\Windows\System32\net.net <== this file only
C:\Program Files\KGB\ <==this folder
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete or find.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine into Normal (preferred if it works) or Safe mode. You don't need Safe Mode with Networking this time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
So we would be looking for a new HiJackThis log and the contents of the Uninstall_list.txt file.

Let me know what you have decided to do. If you have chosen to repair it in spite of the risks, tell me if it's running any different.

I am trying the fix...I'm really screwed. Risk is exciting. I still get the Google Installer, et al. message as soon as I get to my desktop... :(

Following your directions I fixed the registry entries using Hijackthis. I didn't find either the net.net file or the KGB file to delete.

Here's my new HiJackThis Log:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!!
If you have difficulty disabling your antivirus, stop and ask.
Disabling McAfee should work something like this:
DISABLE MCAFEE ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Imagesign.
  • right-click it -> choose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
The McAfee Guard should now be disabled.

  • Immediately Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Make sure antivirus programs are disabled before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. If everything went Ok you can reenable your McAfee protection and post the report in your next reply
A copy of the report is located here -> C:\ComboFix.txt
(McAfee is kind of stupid and it may try to delete Combofix. You probably cannot download Combofix while McAfee is running.)
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

Re: Google Installer encountered a problem and has to close....

Unread postby ilikellipses » August 3rd, 2009, 12:16 pm

So far, this seems fantastic. After removing the first registry items you recommended with Hijackthis, my machine rebooted and the google installer pop-up didn't appear.

I had a little trouble getting Combofix to run, but renaming it worked fine.

After Combofix did its thing, I was able to re-enable my firewall and virus-scan and update the virus scan, which I hadn't been able to do.

This is exciting. Thanks for all of this.

Here's my Combofix report:

ilikellipses,
Good.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Adobe Reader 7.0

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Update your Acrobat/Reader Setup
The older versions of Adobe Acrobat may have a "broken" updater that never stops trying to update. It can seriously slow down or hang a PC.
Older versions of Acrobat and Reader are also vulnerable to various pdf exploits.
You can keep your older, full version of Adobe Acrobat, but you should use it for editing and creation of pdf's only, NOT for opening pdf's on the net.
You can still call Adobe Acrobat 7 from Start, All Programs
--------------------------------------------------------
You should download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.1 are vulnerable.
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
It is currently the 5th item on the page (the page changes often), called JRE 6 Update 14
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Choose Windows Offline installation version.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs. Let it run uninterrupted.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • TFC will most likely require a Reboot. If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
The scan shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds.
----------------------------------------------------
Compose A Script to Locate Files
Please highlight, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the text inside the quote into a new Notepad document.
For %%a in (
"net.net"
"winlogons.exe"
) do (
dir c:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find %%a >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
)
pause
Save it on your Desktop as file type "All Files" (NOT as "Text Documents") and name it FindMe.bat
Close Notepad.
Double click FindMe.bat on your Desktop.
A window will open and close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A new file icon named look.txt will appear on your desktop. Please post the contents of the look.txt file in your next reply.

ilikellipses,
That IS a good thing.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

So we are looking for the new HiJackThis log and the Kaspersky report.
Also please tell me if you use the TightVNC remote control software.

Hi,

I do use TightVNC so my ex-husband who happens to be a security specialist can help me with things sometimes. He's re-married and lives 11 hours away now, so it's very nice and very rare when he does. Yesterday he pushed an update of McAffee for me.

Here's my HiJackThis log:

ilikellipses,
Looks good.
Those items picked up by Kaspersky are in Quarantine folders so they are harmless.
Let's clean up and provide a bit of extra security.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.
------------------------------------------------
USE HOSTS EXPERT TO INSTALL MVPS HOSTS FILE
Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Run HostsXpert
  • If Hosts file is Read Only, click on Make Writeable, otherwise move on to next stage.
  • Click Download button.
  • Click MVPs Hosts
  • Click Merge File
  • Press OK to download latest MVPS update and merge it with your Hosts.
  • When finished click File Handling
  • Click Make Read Only to secure your Hosts file.
  • Exit HostsXpert.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
--------------------------------------------------
Check Security Center
Got to Start, Run.
Type wscui.cpl into the box and hit <Enter>
It should report Firewall ON, Automatic Updates ON, Virus Protection ON.
If any are OFF, choose Manage Security Settings for the item and correct it.
Automatic Updates will protect you against all kinds of nasty things out there and will install your Windows Service Pack 3

I think you should keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as your only AntiSpyware application. Update it and run a Quick Scan every week or so.
(The paid version is a lifetime license and a bargain if you're interested.)

Make sure you keep your Antivirus up to date at all times, and make sure that you only have ONE of them.
You can run Malwarebytes, plus any one Antivirus together with no problem.
If no more issues or questions, you should be good to go.
