Winlogon.exe malware post mortem

Unread postby Paladin_1988 » July 19th, 2009, 1:23 pm

Hi there, not particularly happy to have to see yall guys again haha!

Received fantastic assistance from one of you quite awhile back.

Just today I encountered some form of a winlogon.exe malware. But I've since managed to restore my drive to an earlier state and all seems okay. Here's and account of what happened.

I was looking around for driver updates for my graphic card from ATI. Downloaded on hindsight a rather large file for driver updates (it was something like 40 MBs). I ran it, computer hanged. Restarted, and lo and behold all my profile data is missing.

~~~~~~~~~
(edit) okay I managed to find that site I got my "driver" from.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
oh my on hindsight I can suddenly see all the warning signs, craps..
its actually a sponsored listing on google! Someone should tell them!
~~~~~~~

No backgrounds, no customisation, nothing on the desktop, it was like using a brand new profile. I do store alot of stuff on my desktop, went to Windows Explorer to double check what I was seeing. And I saw an extra 6GBs that were suddenly free space.

Noticed that the computer was quite sluggish, checked the Task Manager and noticed that winlogon.exe was hogging all the resources.

Flipped back to Windows Explorer, and the free space had grown by another 5 GBs. I panicked because part of the 5GBs contained my backup software (Norton GoBack).

Somehow or another I was forced to restart my computer.

On the first run, got an error saying something like "xxx.dl is missing, please restart".

Next run, amazingly Norton GoBack's prestartup screen showed, activated it and successfully restored the drive to yesterday.

And now here I am, thanking God no data seems to be missing.
But yeah, I'm curious, I learnt my lesson hard about IT security the first time around. I myself am rather IT savvy and do all the necessary maintenance of my computer.

1) Any idea what was it?
2) Is any remnant of whatever was it still left?
3) How did I get infected?

Unread postby Wingman » July 24th, 2009, 9:11 pm

Hello... Welcome to the forum.
My name is Wingman, and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.
HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.

I am currently under the guidance of the MRU teachers, everything I post to you, has been reviewed by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses...but not too much
.
;)

Before we begin...please note the following important guidelines.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  3. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  4. Please, if you have questions about something...ASK, don't guess or assume.
  5. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  6. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

If you follow these guidelines, things should proceed smoothly. :)
I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.
In the meantime... please perform the following steps.

Please read the instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions about or problems with, executing these instructions, <STOP> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  3. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  4. The first one, "log.txt", will be maximized
  5. The second one, "info.txt", will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Step 2.
Rooter
Please download Rooter.exe... Copyrighted © by... Eric_71. Save it to your desktop.
SCAN
  1. Double-click on Rooter.exe icon on your desktop, to execute.
If you receive the "Open File" security warning, press Run. The Rooter interface will appear, with a variety of options displayed.
  2. To run the Scan... press the Scan...button.
  3. Notepad will open with a file created called "Rooter#.txt" ... located at %systemdrive%\Rooter$\Rooter#.txt. (# is the number assigned to the report)
The location of the report file is shown in the bottom display window.
  4. Press the Close button, to close the Rooter window.
Please copy and paste the contents of Rooter#.txt in you next reply.

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents
  3. Rooter .txt file contents
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hey Wingman!

Glad to be under your err wing! hahaha

Firstly, need to inform you that I'll be busy during the weekdays, at most of the time I only get to use my computer on the weekends, so I will probably only reply during the weekends.

1: Any problem executing the instructions?
Nope, both programs ran just fine.

Hi Paladin,
I apologize for the delay in getting back to you... the forum is very busy.
Looking over your logs, it appears that you have:

Multiple Antivirus Programs
You are running more than 1 Antivirus program!
a-squared Free 3.1
Norton 360

Running - more than one - antivirus program is not recommended because:
  1. They can conflict with each other.
  2. Report the other antivirus software as malicious.
  3. Antivirus programs use an enormous amount of computer's resources... actively scanning your computer.
  4. Can cause your computer to become unstable...run slowly and even, in rare cases, crash.
I strongly suggest you uninstall one of them.
Which one, is your decision.
I think the A-squared free version would be the one to uninstall.

PunkBuster warning
I noticed you have PunkBuster installed... read the "Published features" section.
PunkBuster can take control over various aspects of your computer and some gaming tools not unlike PunkBuster, also hinder their removals.
By the definition we use, PunkBuster is actual spyware. Therefore, I'm asking you to choose one of the following options:
  1. We "try" to leave PunkBuster alone... however, there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't "inadvertently" get taken out... so PunkBuster might fail. This will also prevent you from playing games using PunkBuster enabled servers.
  2. We can just remove PunkBuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that it is spyware.
  3. We can not clean this computer at all. This ensures PunkBuster will continue to function.
If you choose to remove PunkBuster, please perform the uninstall steps below. Otherwise, let me know what other option you chose.

Uninstall PunkBuster
Please download PBSVC Setup Program. Save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on pbsvc.exe to start it... then click Uninstall.
    Once that's finished...
  2. Click Start > Run and copy and paste the following into the open text box:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c for %i in (A B K) do sc delete PnkBstr%i
  3. Click OK. A black box will flash very briefly, this is normal.
  4. Double click My Computer on your desktop and browse to C:\windows\system32\drivers
  5. Locate the file: PnkBstrK.sys... if found delete it.
Let me know if you performed these steps successfully.

I also noticed that you have the XP System Restore service disabled... is this because you have Norton GoBack 4.02 installed?
We will be making changes to your system registry and I always back up the registry before making any changes.
I may ask you to download a utility that creates a registry backup and can be used to restore it, if the need arises.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem understanding or executing the instructions?
  2. AV uninstalled
  3. PunkBuster decision
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hey Wingman,

1) AV uninstalled
Okay, just to clarify, A-squared is a malware scanner whose niche seems to be trojans. What puts it apart from my other scanners is the usage of heuristics in its scanning. It doesn't do antivirus scanning per se. At the very least, it shouldn't and has not conflicted with Norton. It has no real-time scanning, heck I even disabled its auto updates, so its pretty still until I manually scan my computer.

2) PunkBuster decision
Again I've had PunkBuster for a long time, no problems there. I'll choose the try to avoid PunkBuster option :) PunkBusters been around on my computer right from the start, this recent data failure that I had has little to do with PunkBuster.

3) XP System Restore
Yup, I disabled it, it really stinks IMHO. But thats not important :) Norton's GoBack works for me. A new utility that can backup the registry? Great! That'll be useful to keep handy.

4) How is the computer behaving?
So far so good! :D Everything is per normal, performance is fine.

Hi Paladin,

There is evidence that you have (or had) the P2P program µTorrent installed.
FYI... during the course of cleaning your computer, I will be asking you to remove folders and registry entries, associated with this program.

Step 1.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.

If you already have this program installed, then start it, search for "Updates", then proceed to the "On the Scanner tab:" section of the instructions. Otherwise...

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download site available here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  4. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  5. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  6. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
  3. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  4. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  5. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 2.
Command Line Search
I need you to perform a file search on your computer... please follow these steps:
  1. Press the Start button ...then press Run.
  2. Copy/paste the following command into the text entry box.
    cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "g2p3s.exe" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\fileloc.txt"
  3. Press the "OK"...button
  4. A file called "fileloc.txt" will appear on your Desktop. The command window will eventually close.
  5. When the Command window has closed... Double click on this file... Notepad or Wordpad should open.
Please copy/paste the contents of the fileloc.txt file...in your next reply.

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem understanding or executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM scan results
  3. fileloc.txt contents
  4. Computer still performing properly?
Thanks,
Wingman

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
