Hi
I checked the device manager page all these have exclamation marks
Broadcom 802.11 b/g Wlan - WinpkFilter Miniport
NVIDIA nForce Metworking Controller WinpkFilter Miniport
WAN miniport (IP) WinpkFilter Miniport
WAN Miniport (IPv6) WinpkFilter Miniport

What's all this miniport stuff?

I didn't understand, should I enable AVG and Windows Defender back on? What about Spybot?

Hi
Yes you can re-enable AVG if you like. With the Anti-Spyware programs make sure you only re-enable One of those. I'll leave it up to you as to which one you want.

WinpkFilter: Is that something you installed yourself?

I have completely no idea what winpkfilter is. I googled it, I still don't know what it is. I didn't install it.
Sorry

Hi
Let's try & uninstall WinpkFilter.
  • Open Network Connections by clicking Start>>Control Panel>>Network and Internet>>Network and Sharing Center>>Manage network connections
  • You should see a list of all your network devices
  • Starting with the Broadcom 802.11 b/g Wlan, right click on it & select Properties. You should see something similar to the picture below:
    Image
  • Under the section This connection usese the following items:, see if WinpkFilter is listed there
  • If it is, highlight it then click Uninstall. Make sure you only select WinpkFilter
  • Ok your way out
  • Follow the same procedure for
    • NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
    • WAN miniport (IP)
    • WAN Miniport (IPv6)
Does this fix the internet connection issue?

Hi
All I could find was WnpkFilter driver, so I uninstalled it.
I could find nothing in network connections that said winpkfilter. So I haven't done anything else. But it didn't help anyway, I still can't get online.

Hi
That is good news. Well done. Just curious if you did anything differently?

Hi
Here is the Kaspersky scan log.
Everytime I try to get a Hijackthis scan, it says it is already running.
Should I completely uninstall and download a new Hijackthis?
My computer seems to be running well, except that I can't scroll with the mousepad.

Hi
See if this works for HijackThis.
End a Process using Task Manager
Open Task Manager by pressing crtl + alt + delete keys simultaneously or by right clicking the taskbar at the bottom of your screen & then clicking Task Manager
  • Click Processes
  • Click Image Name to alphabetize the list
  • Find the following process
    HijackThis.exe
  • If present click on it to highlight
  • After clicking on the process, click End Process
  • Close Task Manager

With regard to the mouse issue, what is the brand, model etc. Is it a problem scrolling with the wheel or some other scrolling issue?

Sorry, there was nothing in the processes list about Hijackthis

It's the touchpad, not really a mouse.
synaptics touchpad v6.3, but right now it seems to be working fine.

Hi
I just tried Hijackthis again.
This is the message I got
"For some reason, your system deniedwrite access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijackthis may not be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click staart, run, and type

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. Find the line(s) Hijackthis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista, simply exit Hijackthis, right click on the hijackthis icon, choose run as administrator."

I opened it as administrator, and it still wouldn't run.

Hi
Don't worry too much about HijackThis. I was going to get you uninstall it anyway as part of the cleanup process. I only wanted to see a new log to make sure everything looked OK. You can run DDS again if you like & post that log. It will show me the same information.

Hi
Looks good.

You have an old version of Java which you should remove as it is open to exploitation.
Remove Programs
Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features
Remove these programs by clicking Uninstall

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic

Clean Up
Now we need to clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
Remove ComboFix
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:
ComboFix /u
OTC
Download OTC by Old Timer here & save it to your desktop.
Double click on OTC.exe. Click on CleanUp!.
You will receive a prompt that it needs to restart the computer to remove the files. Click Yes.
It will restart your computer automatically. If it doesn't, please restart your computer manually.
You can delete the following from your desktop:
DDS.scr
The Gmer.exe file (it will be randomly named .exe file)
Flash_Disinfector
Any logs that may have been saved to your desktop

You should also remove HijackThis. You can do this by going to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  • Right click HijackThis.exe then choose Run as Administrator
  • From the Main menu click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Using the scroll bar, scroll down to Uninstall HijackThis
  • Click Uninstall HijackThis & exit then click Yes at the prompt
You can either keep or delete ATF-Cleaner. It's a handy tool for cleaning out temporary folders.

All Clean
Congratulations, good work, your system is now clean. Now that your system is safe we would like you to keep it that way.
Take the time to follow these recommendations & it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates
Speaking of Windows updates you should update your Vista to the latest Service Pack - Vista Service Pack 2. Bare in mind it is a prerequisite to have Vista Service Pack 1 installed before you can update to Service Pack 2. Look here & follow the instructions to install both: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
You can download it here & find a tutorial here.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
  • A short distance down the page in the centre, click on the Download button
  • Agree to the license
  • On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word Hosts Manager choose Save Target As and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop
  • Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager
  • After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop)
  • When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the right side of the bar labeled Options and Tools,
  • Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
  • In the Left Pane, click Download
  • It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.
If you have a separate party firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Web of Trust
WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Install WinPatrol
Download it here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here on how to prevent Malware.

Hopefully these steps will help keep your computer clean.

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
