Our computer has been slow for quite a while, however we are starting to get a blue screen every other day or so. The last time it told me we had mbanswissarmy.sys. I have also had an experience with that bogus antivirus pop-up. I have 2 kids who use the computer so I am not sure what else they may have experienced. I would truly appreciate any help you could give.

Welcome to Malware Removal!
My name is Bjorn, known as Bv202 on this forum and I'll be happy to assist you with all your malware problems you have on your computer.

Before we start fixing your computer, there are a few points you need to know:
  • Please don't start a new topic, but reply on this one.
  • If you don't understand something, please ask!
  • If you find any new problems and/or details, please post them!
  • Please always try to reply within 3 days. If you know you won't be able to reply for any reason, please tell me so we don't close your thread.
  • As I'm still in training here at Malware Removal, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first.

Remember: absence of symptoms does not mean your computer is clean!!
Please reply to this topic until I say your computer is clean.

I'm now researching your log. Once it's done, I'll be back to you.

In the meantime, please do this:
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Look under Misc tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.

Hey grndl

Your version of HijackThis is outdated. Please remove it and install the newest version:
  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your desktop and run it.
  • Following the on-screen prompts.
  • You don't need to run it right now.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, after i tell you that your computer is clean.

Disable AdWatch
Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Don't forget to re-enable it, after i tell you that your computer is clean.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.

RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

In your next reply, please post:
1) The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware logfile
2) The RSIT logs

Have completed Spybot instructions- no problem

Adaware- can not find the auto and active options you speak of. I have the anniversary edition- I have looked under settings (and everything else) as well- can you give me any more details about where I might find it?

Malwarebytes- I already had this- I will run this again after I am done here, but would you like any of my old scans? I believe I have run it 3 or 4 times. Also, since I already had it I can not find where to check for automatic updates. Again, I have looked through all of the tabs, etc.

I will run download the other one after I run the Malwarebytes scan.

Thank you again for your help!!!!!!

Hey grndl

Please follow these instructions to disable Ad-Aware:
  • Start Ad-Aware
  • Click the Ad-Watch tab
  • Click the Settings button
  • Ensure all highlighted options bellow are unchecked:(some settings may be used or changed only in the Pro version)

    Under the General tab
    • Processes Protection
    • Registry Protection
    • Network Protection
    Under the Detection Layers tab:
    • Spyware heuristics
    • AntiVirus engine
  • OK your way out, and close the main Ad-Aware window.
  • Shut down Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch Live! by right clicking on the system tray icon, and selecting Exit Ad-Aware.
  • OK the change.

Please let me know if you have trouble with these instructions :)

You can find the updates here:

Please update your version and perform a full scan. Yes, it would be handy if you give me the logs of your previous runs too :)

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
