Hi :)

Esker License Agreement
The app execution is not authorized, The line service could not start, The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
Not a cause for concern, this most likely occurred because the software was not uninstalled correctly at some point. The service was active actually but we have successfully removed it now.

As for the email folder, Id rather just delete the entire contents of folder. Just point me to it.Thanks
Fine, we will actually target it with the OTM script below.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT >> ERUNT

  • Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  • In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
  • System registry
  • Current user registry
  • Next click on OK
  • When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes
  • After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
  • Now click on OK. A backup has been created.

Note: If you have uninstalled ERUNT since we last used it, please inform myself before proceeding any further.

Custom OTM Script:

  • Double-click OTM to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Code: Select all
:Processes
Explorer.EXE
brsvc01a.exe
brss01a.exe

:Services
BrSplService

:Files
C:\WINDOWS\system32\brsvc01a.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\brsvc01a.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Betty Lovelace\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

:Reg
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}]

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTM.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform a Quick Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is running. Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • OTM Log.
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Re: PC Hijacked

Unread postby Dakeyras » July 7th, 2009, 7:25 am

Hi :)

There appears to be a problem with removing the service relating to the once installed Brother printer. It should not cause any impact to overall system performance but it would be better if it is removed.

Two final methods left we can try as we do not have access to the original printer installation CD-ROM I am surmising as follows:

First Method:

Please navigate to:

Start >> Control Panel >> Printers and Faxes >> right click on the icon for Brother Printer(whatever brother modal if present)

Then select Delete and follow the prompts.

Second Method:

Only try this if no printer was found to be deleted in the first method.

Go here to download the Brother Uninstaller software.

The instructions on the download page are quite easy to follow and the entry you wish to be removing with the uninstall application is the driver:

XP spl Service

When finished delete the files/software that were downloaded and empty the Recycle Bin.

Let myself know the outcome of the above and or if any problems encountered.

Note: I will need to know the outcome of the above either way as we need to correctly uninstall all the applications that have been used during the malware removal process. Plus I will be providing advice on how to protect yourself and computer online for the future etc.

Only reason I have not posted it this time is so not to give your good self information overload whilst we are still addressing the printer service issue.

I did a search for brother and there are probably close to a hundred files. Does it matter that Brother C;\Program files are read-only. And if we leave them on there will they leave myself open for backdoor intrusions Thanks

Hmmm interesting occurrence, not a cause for alarm I may add OK

In theory it is possible they could be exploited but in this instance and with the malware we have been dealing with I think it most unlikely. But I am anything if a careful helper so think it prudent to investigate further.

Overall with any application that has been uninstalled there will be the odd stray file and registry entry left behind and for the most part they pose no threat what so ever or will impact on overall system performance and so far we have removed the main executable files so any threat is quite negligible in my humble opinion and not a cause for concern.

Is the actual full folder path you mentioned:

C:\Program Files\Brother

If so we can remove this in a safe manner which I can advise how to. Also run the Brother Uninstall Tool(brunins) again and check if anything is flagged for removal still but take no action OK.

Also please post a new HijackThis Log for myself to double check, thank you.

Re: PC Hijacked

Unread postby Dakeyras » July 7th, 2009, 6:17 pm

Hi :)

Not a lot else I can safely advise at this point I am afraid for the seemingly remaining Brother printer related service. Please recall my prior advice:
Some advice for the future never purchase a ex business machine again, apart from the malware which we have almost eradicated overall the machine is quite a mess, this is not your fault however but rather the company who got rid/sold. They should have wiped the hard-drive and carried out a fresh installation of the operating system.
I honestly do not think this remaining service will pose a problem and or a security risk for your computer and if I attempt to go any further because of this computers former use I may end up up irreparably damaging the Operating System.

I can offer two choices now as I primarily only provide Anti-Malware support(though upon occasion I may go that bit further beyond my role here in MWR, as I have with your good self)

1:- A reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

2:- If you wish to seek assistance with a view to the Brother related service, the best advice I can give is to is create a account at one of the following forums and post in the appropriate section.

By all means include a link back to this topic: Topic URL

I am a member of both of the below myself and they have outstanding IT Tech Support Staff:

Specific Software Support:

Next:

Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in Combofix /u in the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image

Clean up with OTM:

  • Double-click OTM to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTM as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed security application, Grisoft AVG 8.5 automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Erunt:

Emergency Recovery Utility NT, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note: Internet Explorer v8 has been recently released from its beta program, my advice hold off upgrading for the time being as no doubt flaws will be identified and fixes released over the coming months.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

Only use one of the above.

Advised Optional Installation:

There is no sign of a software firewall installed on your system. Regardless if using a hardware type and or using the inbuilt Windows Service Pack 3 firewall this is a necessary application as it will also provide outbound protection where as the aforementioned do not.

I highly advise you download ONE of the following firewalls and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.

This article is a excellent resource regarding the aforementioned firewalls: Understanding and Using Firewalls

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the author is well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions, feel free to ask. If not stay safe!
