askey, I get the same error "Parameter is incorrect". However, I did run the program direct from IE and, although no log was generated, Bluelight found no hidden files.

bronkette,
You have some browser settings that have been arranged by your dial-up ISP.
Were you getting redirects before you signed up for the dial-up service?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.

-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine

askey, yes I was getting the redirects b4 the vacation (dial-up). I will be afk for the rest of today and most of tomorrow. Unfortunately, the vacation is coming to an end. At least the next time I log on will be through our cable modem. I will follow your instructions when I get home. I think we may be getting close...I goggled and did NOT get redirected the last time. I didn't have time to actually see if that was a fluke or *fingers crossed*, fixed.

I'll most likely log in tomorrow evening with the result of the HJT log.

bronkette,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath.
Copy and paste this filepath:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ws2_32.dll

Then hit Submit or Upload, depending on the scanner.
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy and/or save the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
or virus.org here: http://scanner.virus.org/

Re: Annoying redirects

Unread postby askey127 » June 14th, 2009, 12:49 pm

bronkette,
This is certainly a tough one to find. Some of these newer redirect infections are very difficult to locate.
We have been thru most of the checks for infection patterns we have seen before.
Can you tell me whether the redirects are to the same sites all the time, or does it seem random?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the BlueTack HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=dscript&CODE=showdetails&f_id=5
A short distance down the page in the center, click on the Download button.
Agree to the license.
On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop).
When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the Right side of the bar labeled "Options and Tools",
Click Disable DNS Service. This is important; otherwise your next boot-up may take a VERY long time.
When this has been done, in the left pane, click on Download.
It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

If you have a separate third party firewall, or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one. (It may be most convenient to right-click and Exit Winpatrol before beginning.)

Once you install your new HOSTS file, it will stop access to many malicious websites. If your old HOSTS file is perchance involved in the redirects, it will be corrected.

askey, downloaded, installed and saved. I'll let you know how it's working.

OK, this is interesting...instead of redirects, I'm getting an error message:

Connection Interrupted

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

bronkette,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Gmer and Unzip it to your Desktop
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
If no warning....
Click the rootkit tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked... leave everything checked and uncheck the Registry box. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.

Click the >>> tab. This will open up all available tabs for you.
Click the Autostart tab then the scan button. Once its done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please, and paste the contents into your reply.

bronkette,
You may want to print this or save it as a notepad file for reference.
You have a Rootkit infection, which is the reason we haven't been able to see everything that's causing the trouble.
Now let's see if we can get it.
Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file.
Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software (Winpatrol) BEFORE running ComboFix!!
If you don't know how to disable your antibvirus, stop and ask

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

Here's what happened. I followed your instructions. Combofix was running, deleting a bunch of files, then instructed me to allow combofix to restart my computer. It specifically said NOT to manually restart. Once my computer rebooted I had to log in. When I did the combofix window was open but blank. I waited 35 minutes and nothing had happened. So I closed it and restarted it. So, here's the log I finally got but it probably doesn't show the results from the first scan.

bronkette,
Go to Microsoft's website here => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System as if you were going to make floppies (use the one for WinXP SP2.)
Download the file & Save it with its original name, to your Desktop, next to ComboFix.exe.
Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the Downloaded setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.
You can exit Combofix.
-------------------------------------------------------------
  • Open a new Notepad window (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad). Choose File, New.
  • Highlight the contents of the codebox below and press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
    Code: Select all
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\gaopdxserv.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ovfsthxdoyltfqh
    c:\windows\system32\ovfsthxkiqorcvh.da_
    c:\windows\system32\ovfsthxxvrtfhwx.dl_
    c:\windows\system32\ovfsthxsntsecbo.dl_
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ovfsthxbborujnv.sy_
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\gaopdxkaiddtpp.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ovfsthxbborujnv.sys

  • Paste the contents of the clipboard into the Notepad window by pressing Ctrl+V or Edit, Paste
  • Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

    Image
  • Now drag and drop the CFScript.txt icon onto combofix.exe as in the picture above, and follow the prompts.
  • Then post the resultant log, C:\ComboFix.txt, in your next reply.
