Hey,
I recently received a pop up alert from AVG saying that there was a threat on my computer: dreamhive.net/ I apparently got it from opening a website of the same name which had a gallery of paintings on it. My computer is now slow as is my internet. I have Windows XP and a range of anti-virus and anti-malware programs which are saying my machine is clean. Here is my HijackThis logfile. Thankyou

Re: Downloader alert

Unread postby DFW » April 30th, 2009, 8:35 am

Hi SteelInc

I would keep away from dreamhive.net, my Antivirus also flagged up TrojanDownloader.Agent.IJ trojan

http://www.pctools.com/mrc/infections/i ... .Agent.IJ/

Apart from the 1 alert AVG gave you about dreamhive.net, which probably blocked it, but we will check, are you showing any others symptoms,
like pop ups, unusual hard drive activity and system wide slowdowns did your Internet connection slow down at the same time as the AVG alert.??
Did the online F-Secure Online Scanner ever flag anything?

I would like you to run a online scan and a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan, run this cleaning tool below first.

Please download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and select update, then click check for updatesSelect SCAN Tab "Perform FULL Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.[/list]
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log & a description of any remaining problems

Please post back

Hi DFW,
My computer is quite slow, even after freeing up much space. The internet is also slow, much slower than usual. However, no pop-ups, search engine hijacking or anything like that so far.
Here is the Malwarebytes logfile:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36
Database version: 2066
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

5/2/2009 11:32:48 AM
mbam-log-2009-05-02 (11-32-48).txt

Hi DFW,
The eset scanner wants me to install activeX controls for it to work, but when I say allow on the information bar, Windows says it is an unknown publsiher and therefore will not install the controls. I have tried changing settings but still no luck. Do you know how I can get around this? Thanks,
SteelInc.

Reset your ActiveX security settings like so...

Go to Start, Settings, the Control Panel.
Go to Internet Options - Security - Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX section, set the first two options "Download Signed and Unsigned ActiveX controls" to 'Prompt', and "Initialize and Script ActiveX Controls not marked as Safe" to 'Disable'

Hi SteelInc

Going over all you log, I am sure AVG done it's job well and blocked TrojanDownloader from that site, and Malware is not
causing your slowdowns.

The slowness of your system could be down to a lot of factors, software installed, startups and the specification of your system.

Lets try some routine maintenance to see if that helps.

First off you have Spybot - Search & Destroy Teatimer and WinPatrol running, Teatimer and Winpatrol are both HIPS programs,
You do not need 2 Hips program running at the same time, they could conflict, and cause slowdowns or system hangs, so I would only
run the realtime protection in one, It is up to you which one you keep running, but if you ask me I would keep Winpatrol running
and just use Spybot - Search & Destroy for on demand scanning when needed.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

  • If you have version 1.5, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools.
  • Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
  • Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

If you have not ran a CHKDSK and DEFRAG for some time do it now
Check your Harddrive for errors

Go to your C Drive, Right click and select properties

Click on the tools tad

Click on check now button

Tick automaticly fix system errors, then click start

You will get a warning that it can not be run,

Click yes to run the next time you start windows

Now restart your system, so CHKDSK can now run.

Defragment your drive. Go to Start > Accessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
Highlight the drive you installed XP on, usually C >click the Defragment button.
This will take a while. When finished shut down and restart.

This will help a lot

Go to Start, Run, type services.msc and press enter.
Left-click on the status bar twice to filter all the started service to the top.
Double left-click on the Service Name you wish to change. Change the "Startup Type" to either Automatic, Manual or Disabled then select "Apply" and "OK", repeat for all of the following:

Disabled this Services

Indexing Service

Default Windows XP visual settings may look nice but they slow your system down.
Here is how to keep the eye candy look of Windows XP while getting a snapper feel.

Instructions - Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "Advanced" tab, in the "Performance" section select "Settings".
Leave only the following checked:

Show shadows under menus
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show translucent selection rectangle
Smooth edges of screen fonts
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons
Use Common Tasks In Folders

Then select Apply and OK, then reboot.

Hope this helps,

If the above does not help, I would suggest that you go to one of the forums below that specialize in more general computer problems.
They have people that know more about this sort of problem because it does not seem to be a malware problem.
