Malware Problem

Unread postby EricP » April 9th, 2009, 2:04 pm

I turned on my monitor this morning to find messages from SpywareRemoval2009. Recognizing that this looked like malware by itself, I tried closed the windows (with the x in the upper right corner), hoping to prevent making it worse. I'm not sure how it got on the machine, as there was no apparent issues last night, and the windows were on the machine in the morning.

Once I noticed the issue this morning, I've spent the last 6+ hours trying to resolve the problem. During that time, I've installed the SpyHunter3 program (full version for $29.95), and it identifies 6 registry issues, all either Trojan.Vundo or Zlob.Trojan related. Unfortunately, however, the SpyHunter3 'fix' does not work, as it removes some of the entries and requires a reboot to get the rest of them removed. However, upon reboot and after rerunning SpyHunter3, the same 6 issues are still on the machine.

I've also tried the AVG Free version (which was already on the machine, but apparently unable to prevent the infection). Finally, I tried SUPERAntispyware, which was recommended somewhere on my searches, but that seems to hang during it's scan.

Finally, I found this forum, and have installed the HijackThis software and am posting here.

The following is the HijackThis log:

Looks like I've got it fixed now.

For those looking for help on this site, and getting no response, the following is what I ended up doing:

I purchased the full edition ($29.95) of SpyHunter3, but it didn't seem to do much. It would identify the malware, but was unable to remove it (in Safe Mode or otherwise). However, I had very good success with SuperAntiSpyware (with an assist from AVG). I ran both of these antivirus programs both in Safe Mode as well as regular mode, and was finally able to rid myself of the problem (I think).

I do still have a recurring cookie, I think, which I haven't been able to remove (ih.ad.yieldmanager[1].txt). But, I'm hoping this is relatively harmless. The recurrance popup ads are gone, which was my original issue.
