Firefox closes and google searches redirect...

Unread postby mbross » April 6th, 2009, 5:10 am

Hello,
I clearly have a problem with my computer and luckily I have discovered this great forum.
My problem is that Firefox often closes (I get a message that Firefox has crashed and must close) and another thing I noticed is that links from google searches are redirected to wrong pages (hitting the back button brings me to the correct pages).
Here is the hijack log:

Hi mbross,

Welcome to MRU. My name is davis. I will be helping you to fix your malware problems.
If your issues have been resolved or already received help elsewhere, then please let us know. If not, and still need help. Please follow the instructions in the following.
In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer. Please rescan your computer and post a new HJT log and an Uninstall List.

Make an Uninstall List

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
5. Click on the Save list button
6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default, it's named uninstall_list.txt.
7. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply and a fresh HJT log.

Please detail the problem you're experiencing. Thanks.

Re: Firefox closes and google searches redirect...

Unread postby mbross » April 12th, 2009, 2:30 am

Hi Davis,
First of all, thank you so much for taking ownership of my problem. Hopefully, with your expertise, my computer will soon run normally again. Here are a few details about the problem I am experiencing:
- I have a laptop and I connect to the internet via a wireless router, so if at any point you want me to disconnect the router and connect directly to the modem, please let me know.
- Both Mozilla FF and IE randomly crash during browsing (I use FF about 90% of the time). I get the message that firefox has crashed and must close. There is no particular pattern, sometimes it happens 3 times in 5 minutes and sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes.
- When I perform searches on google or yahoo and get a list of results, clicking on any result will redirect me to unfamiliar search engines that seem like advertisement/spamming sites. While it's redirecting, it's showing a message such as "waiting for tosearch.us (or searchto.biz) to redirect" and then it takes me to some random search engine with advertisements on it. The advertisements are usually in some way connected to the subject I searched for.
- I have also noticed that my computer has slowed down since this problem appeared about 10 days ago. I no longer use it for online banking because I fear a breach of security. I still do use it for browsing and email.
-After I first noticed the problem, I did a full scan with Norton and it found 4 problems (3 viruses), which it fixed successfully, but it didn't fix the problem I am having. I believe 3 of the viruses were Downloaders and one had a different name, which I can't remember.
-Finally, another thing I noticed was that a messenger icon appeared on the bottom right list of icons after the problem occurred. I am not 100% sure, but I don't think it was ever there before since I never use it (I didn't even know I had it on the computer). So I disabled it from running and now it's not showing, but I suspect there could be something wrong there.
I hope this helps you a little bit in diagnosing my problem. Waiting for your response with next steps. Thank you!

Re: Firefox closes and google searches redirect...

Unread postby davis » April 13th, 2009, 4:17 am

Hi mbross,

Step1

Please close all browsers and other windows while running GooredFix.

  • Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt).
Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Step2

Please download RegQuery by Noviciate to your desktop

  1. Copy the following registry keypath by highlighting the text and pressing CTRL and C at the same time

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32

  2. Double click RegQuery.exe to run the program
  3. Paste the text you have copied using CRTL and V, into the textbox
  4. Click the Query button
  5. A Notepad file will open. Please paste the contents in your next reply
  6. You may now close the RegQuery program

Step3

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  1. Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  2. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  3. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  4. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  5. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  6. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  7. Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  8. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  9. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.or you can find from here:
  10. C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  11. You can refer to this tutorial

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.GooredFix log
2.RegQuery result
3.MBAM log
4.New HJT log Thanks

Hi Davis,
When I tried to run an update on Malwarebytes, the first 2 times it closed with the message "Malwarebytes encountered an error and it must close." However, the 3rd time it worked and no new updates were found. Just thought I would mentioned this. Thanks for your help and here are the logs in the order you requested:

Hi Davis,

Good news! All the tasks were performed successfully and the computer seems to be working normally. There is no more redirecting searches and so far the browser has not crashed and browsing is faster. KAS scan did not find anything. Thanks again and here are the logs you requested:

Hi mbross,

the computer seems to be working normally

That sounds good. Do you have any remaining issues on your machine? If not, let's do some tidy up.

Step1

  1. Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  2. Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  3. Click the CleanUp! button.
  4. Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  5. If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  6. The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  7. Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Remember to delete the RegQuery, reg file and all the logs we have used.

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Update your antivirus programs

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

Please referring this thread to configure Internet Explorer 8 properly.

  3. Update your Your Adobe Acrobat Reader

Old versions may render vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please download Adobe Reader 9 to your desktop.
Uninstall the old Adobe Reader from Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Install the new one.

  4. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Clean your PC with a-squared Free

  5. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

  6. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Hi Davis,

We did not download combofix during the cleanup process, so I couldn't complete step 1. Please let me know if there is something else I should do instead. I don't have any other issues with my machine and I will follow the rest of your recommendations. Thank you so much for helping me and all the best!

Sorry for the wrong paste, I should revise it a little bit. :? The OTCleanIt will do the job and you may flush system restore points to get a fresh restore point. Other than that, you should be good to go.

Glad we could help. good luck. :)
