We have run SpyBot almost daily and get a VirtuMonde and RightMedia removed every time. We get a pop-up window that looks like an Internet Explorer window titled "reminder for....(whatever day it is)" with an error that it can't finish opening the page, except that you can't click an "x" in the top right corner to close the pop-up. The only way to close the pop-up is to ctrl-alt-del and "end task." We have had to reinstall default system settings twice in the past six months due to computer just not working. Thankfully, we were able to back up our information on an external hard drive.

Should I run HijackThis on the external drive as well? Below is the log of the C: drive on the computer.

Thank you!
Laura DeMoss

Re: Please help!-spybot and antivirus not helping!

Unread postby Dakeyras » April 14th, 2009, 4:16 am

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi elprego and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Should I run HijackThis on the external drive as well?
No need to run HijackThis on this drive, we will however at some point physically check this drive also for malware OK

Disable Spybot S&D Registry Guard(TeaTimer):

This is so it does not interfere with the malware removal process, you may re-enable this when I give the all clear.

  • If you have version 1.5 or 1.6, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools.
  • Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
  • Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Note: This is a very important step and must be completed before the next.

Very Important!:

You appear to have no Anti-Virus software installed and running. There may be several reasons for this. Either you have disabled your antivirus or there's no antivirus installed. This is a very unsafe practice when accessing the internet and most likely the cause of your malware problems. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it. If you have no antivirus installed download just one only of the two free anti-virus programs listed below please:

Then Install >> Update >> Carry Out a Complete Scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Next:

Now lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer before anymore proactive measures OK, as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Avast found a Trojan and I put it in chest as it suggested.

Now I continue to get a pop-up window that asks if I want to install Adobe Flash Player, but it doesn't do anything if I say yes or no. I have started to just click the "x" at the top right corner to get rid of it.

Hi :)

Avast found a Trojan and I put it in chest as it suggested.
That is fine

Now I continue to get a pop-up window that asks if I want to install Adobe Flash Player, but it doesn't do anything if I say yes or no. I have started to just click the "x" at the top right corner to get rid of it.
OK not a problem, we can address this shortly.

You have the remnants of a Symantec installation present which would be prudent to remove. Also your Adobe Reader is out of date, which we will also address as older installations pose a security risk and can be used as a back-door to reinfect a system with malware.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

LiveReg
LiveUpdate 1.80

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Update Adobe Installation:

Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 update can be downloaded from here, then install the update.

Then download the Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 security update from here. Now install the security update.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Hi :)

OK no problem, the actual Adobe installation may be corrupted. I would like you physically check if it is indeed still installed and then remove it as follows:
(We will update the entire application later on)

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Acrobat 5.0

Note: If any problems, just carry on with the instructions below and inform myself in your next reply and we will address any issues next OK

Re: Please help!-spybot and antivirus not helping!

Unread postby Dakeyras » April 20th, 2009, 5:40 pm

Hi :)

A question if I may, is there any particular reason you have not replied back for nearly four days? I have to say this is not good at all, unless there is a valid reason and the computer I am providing my free assistance for is not being used online during these periods of inactivity.

I will take into account any extenuating circumstances but please be aware the situation as it stands now is far from ideal and I may withdraw my assistance unless you have a really good reason for such a prolonged period of inactivity between replies.

Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.80 (Symantec Corporation)

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next:

Now click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.

  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

The scan took some time it appears, however you never let the application carry out its disinfection process. We need to re-scan and remove anything found as follows:

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform a Quick Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.

  • Answer to my query re time between replys.
  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Re: Please help!-spybot and antivirus not helping!

Unread postby elprego » April 21st, 2009, 9:03 am

It took nearly 3 days to run the anti-Malware software - every time my computer went into sleep mode, it stopped working. When I came back to the computer to check on it, it would start up again. The total scan time was 16 hours, but took A LOT longer because of only working when I was sitting here keeping the computer out of sleep mode.

And no, I was not able to use the computer during that time - which is really difficult!

I truly appreciate your help with this matter.
THANK YOU!

Sorry, forgot to mention in my post that I did remove LiveReg and Live Update when you asked me to. Now, I tried it again and they do not show up in the list of Add/Remove programs.

Working on Disk Cleanup now, then will reboot.
