Hello! I'd be deeply grateful for any advice that you might have.

A few days ago, McAfee popped up with a series of alerts. Here's how the log from that fateful day looks:

3/20/2009 1:32:49 AM Cleaned C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\M3DE3SK9\index[5].htm JS/Tenia.d (Trojan)
3/20/2009 1:33:48 AM Deleted C:\DOCUME~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\wJQs.exe C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\UAC5636.TMP DNSChanger.gen (Trojan)
3/20/2009 1:33:54 AM Delete failed (Clean failed) C:\DOCUME~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\wJQs.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\UAC5636.tmp DNSChanger.gen (Trojan)
3/20/2009 1:34:30 AM No Action Taken (Delete failed) SYSTEM McShield.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\UAC5636.tmp
3/20/2009 1:34:36 AM No Action Taken (Delete failed) SYSTEM McShield.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\UAC5636.tmp
3/20/2009 1:36:25 AM No Action Taken (Delete failed) SYSTEM McShield.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\UAC5636.tmp
3/20/2009 2:12:32 AM Deleted SYSTEM McShield.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\UAC5636.tmp

Nothing seemed amiss until the next day, when I restarted my computer. A series of errors related to Google desktop pop up on startup. Any time I run a Google search, the results page takes a long time to load and the links on the results page redirect to ads. I've run McAfee, Windows Defender, and Spybot Search & Destroy in regular and safe modes, but they all come up clean. I'm unable to download updates to any of these programs, and I wasn't able to install Hijack This on my hard drive (I had to install it on my USB drive at work and run it from there). When I try to stop some suspicious processes through Task Manager, popups appear that say "This process is essential and cannot be ended."

Here is the Hijack This log:

We are sorry you have waited so long for a response. As you can see, we are quite busy as are all the other help forums. Also, it is possible that you received no response because there was no malware evident in your HijackThis log.

If you still require help, please start a new topic and post a fresh HijackThis log, along with a complete description of all symptoms you are currently experiencing that make you feel your system is infected with malware. Also, in the same post, please include an Uninstall List.

To create an Uninstall List, open HijackThis and, from the Main Menu > click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button > click "Open Uninstall Manager" > click "Save List." Save the list to your Desktop or any convenient location. Next, copy the contents of the Uninstall List and paste it into the same post as your HijackThis log.

This topic is now closed. Please start a new topic by following the HijackThis Guideline posted here, and be sure to include your Uninstall List: >Guideline for posting your HijackThis log<
