HiJack Log Review

Unread postby dmclean » March 16th, 2009, 2:33 pm

I get a lot of pop-ups, especially the annoying flashing ones that say I'm a winner. I have pop-up blocker on along with phishing, adware and anti-virus. Also, occasionally I have a web page pop-up that I didn't request. One that I've gotten several times says I have a virus and it shows a screen of my file folders all infected. My IE-7 will also occasionally hicup saying it has encountered an error. It gives me the option of sending an error report but they don't have a solution to the problem I experience and don't tell me what it is either. I've recently doubled my memory from 1G to 2 hoping this would improve performance but I stil experience slow activity with web sites such as not being able to move the slider bar down right away even though the page has loaded. Sometimes going to another web page and back will fix it. I've looked at my HiJack report but don't see anything that looks out of place. However, I'm no expert at this stuff so any help or input would be appreciated. I did reinstall my XP a while back which seemed to help a little but most of the problems came back.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click ''Show Results'' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Download random''s system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Here is the results. I have TrendMicro Internet Security Pro installed. I also scanned this computer with Norton Internet Security and neither one picked up on these viruses. How did these viruses get missed? What does a person have to do to make sure his/her computer stays clean, and what other problems could be imbedded in my computer that Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware wouldn't pick up?

Thanks so much for your help. I hope it fixes the problems I've been experiencing.

Sincerely,
Dahl McLean

No antivirus can find all threats.

in addition to that, malwarebytes has been made to find those which antivirus usually miss.

I'd like you to check a file for malware.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsound3dd.dll

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
  • Post back results, please.

Here is the Virus Total Results. I have 3 other laptops on my wireless network. I ran Malwarebytes on one of them and it found over 200 problems. I plan on running it on the remaining two. What are the chances that this computer we've been working on will become reinfected since it is attached to the network?

Many thanks,
Dahl

It depends on infections.

So far there is none that would spread like that.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsound3dd.dll

    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post along with a fresh hijackthis log.

Well, OTMoveIt didn't work the first time and gave me an error box to send to Microsoft. I closed that which closed MoveIt. I ran the program again and here are the results. I followed your procedures after OTMoveIt required a reboot.

OK, that file is still there.

We will continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
