Computer being hijacked by malware I am guessing

Unread postby apseals » March 15th, 2009, 1:45 pm

Yesterday while surfing the internet, I think I clicked on a website that put something on my computer. I can still connect to the internet but when I start my computer my wireless network icon is not there and there is several pop ups. When i search through a search engine it takes me to other sites and not the one i clicked on. I have a laptop running on Windows XP HP Pavilion DV 4000. Here is the log from Hijack this. Any help is muchly appreciated. Thanks!

Unread postby dan12 » March 15th, 2009, 6:12 pm

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Re: Computer being hijacked by malware I am guessing

Unread postby apseals » March 16th, 2009, 12:04 pm

I was able to download both programs by some miracle. I opened and used the ATF cleaner with no problem. When I tried to follow with the Malwarebytes program, i was able to install it like you directed but it did not run after the installation. I uninstalled it and tried it again without the autolaunch and update checked and it still did not run.

When I turn on my computer, the computer starts as usual but while Windows and the programs are loading I first get :
"The HP Wireless Assistant is not supported on this machine." (but i can sometimes still connect to the internet as stated above.
That is followed a minute or so later with a svchost.exe box - application error:
"The instruction at "0x7c9118e9" referenced memory at "0xffffffff8". The memory could not be "read". Click on Ok to terminate program."

I have tried running the Malware before clicking on each of the above and it does not run. I then click on both boxes and tried again. I got this dialog box:
"The instruction "0x7564d383" referenced memory at 0x00000060". The memory could not be "read"."

Thanks so much for your continued help.

I renamed the file. It installed but did not come up after checking the two options. Tried again without checking the two options. Still did not come up. Uninstalled again and reinstalled like instructed with "apseals". Still did not come up.

It ran with the new one you told me to use. I ran the malware. I had about 300 "An Error occureed. Please report error code to MalWare Support Team. Error Code: 722 (0,7)" but after hitting OK each time, the scan continued. Whew.
Here is the log you requested. Thanks for staying with me on this.

I ran HJT and deleted the files as instructed. they were all there.
I used ATF and deleted the files as instructed.
I tried to click to the link you gave for the online scan at eset.
My browser would not connect. when i put it into my address section it went to yahoo search and it would not connect when i clicked on the link.
What do I do now?
