W32/Patcher (Virus) sorry here is HJT log

Unread postby golf1here » March 13th, 2009, 12:45 pm

I recieved this notice from McAfee:
McAfee has detected an infected file that cannot be quarantined. We recommend that you restart and scan your computer now.

About this Virus
Detected: W32/Patcher (Virus)
Location: C:\windows\system32\sens.dll

A virus is a self-replicating program that can harm your computer, compromise its security, and damage valuable files.

However my McAfee can't remove this. Can you help?
Thank you

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

We need to disable windows defender.
A good program but may interfere with our fixes.

Open Windows Defender
Click Tools
Click General Settings
Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
Close Windows Defender

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

Close that.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, a log will open. Please post the contents of that log.txt

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log so NO reason to post one of those.

Just so you know sens.dll is a legitimate windows file as long as it's in the right place. The system32 folder.
But wwe are going to scan it to be sure. It has been flagged before as a false positive .

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.

C:/windows/system32/sens.dll

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 10Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

Please go to jottis again and upload and scan this file for me just as you did the last one.,
I want to be sure we have a good replacement as your does look infected.

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\sens.dll

Also

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

E-Mule and Limewire

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programmes.

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Please let me know you have uninstalled these programs and post the results from Jottis for me.

Ok we're going to replace that file with a good one.

___________________________________
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

rename the old file

Click start >> run and type/copy in
c:/windows/system32
hit OK.
In the next window that opens
Look for sens.dll

right click it and choose rename and rename it to
sens.dll.old ( that's sens dot dll dot old )

Leave that folder open but you may minimize it.

_____________________________________

click start >> run and type in
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

Navigate to sens.dll right click that file and choose copy.

go back to the system32 folder right click in a blank area and choose paste.

That's it we replaced the bad file with a good one.

To the best of my knowledge Erunt is freeware and shouldn't expire.
I would uninstall the one you have and download from the link I used . Doesn't ever hurt to have a backup of the registry.

Because Malwarebytes found more than I expected (part of Smitfraud) I would like to see 1 last scan.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan. This scan will take a while so don't plan on watching it. ;)

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Please post the log from Kasperskys and let me kow things are still running ok.

Stay clear of Peer to peer programs. They simply open you up to infections like this one and much much worse.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
