Can't get rid of Winfix & WinAntiSpyware

Unread postby johnh1211 » September 17th, 2005, 3:57 pm

Winfix & WinAntiSpyware keep popping up relentlessly. Also ran a full McAfee virus scan and it told me that c:\windows\system32\ddayx.dll was a "Potentially Unwanted Progam". Numerous attempts to delete this file have been friutless. I've run MS AntiSpyware, AdAware, Spybot. Please help. Here is my Hijackthis log...

Welcome to the forum. I am checking your log now and will return as soon as I have researched all the items.

While we are working together, please ....
  • Reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • If you are unsure of what to do, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Be patient. HijackThis logs take some time to research.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues: This may or may not, solve other issues you may have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. (Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.)
  • The process may take considerable time.

There are a few problems on your computer which we can fix, to be able you need to follow the below instructions. If not sure don't hestite to ask any questions.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
it should look like this

Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:

http://www.atribune.org/forums

http://www.247fixes.com/forums

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddayx.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddayx - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddayx.dll

Can't get rid of Winfix & WinAntiSpyware

Unread postby johnh1211 » September 19th, 2005, 10:19 pm

Hi Middle of Nowhere,

ActiveScan stalled trying to scan c:\windows\explorer.exe.
This may be related: I can only access a command prompt in safe mode (explorer doesn't load)...but I was able to run VundoFix.
Also, I never got the "Blue Screen of Death"...maybe because I ran from the command prompt?

Here's the HijackThis log:

Hi Middle of Nowhere,

Looks like part of my message got truncated. I was trying to tell you that I was able to run VundoFix even though I had to do it from the command prompt.

Hi

You have the latest version of VX2.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

or from here

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.

Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
Double click l2mfix.bat and select option 1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and post it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hi johnh1211

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option 2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new Hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the PC has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't disappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddayx.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddayx - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddayx.dll

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis

Reboot your computer back into normal mode.

Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!

Once your machine is in normal mode, please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan

When finished copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks

Can't get rid of Winfix & WinAntiSpyware

Unread postby johnh1211 » September 26th, 2005, 10:28 pm

Hi Middle of Nowhere
I followed your instructions...
A couple of notes:
1. Hijackthis did not find the 1st entry - c:\windows\system32\ddayx.dll
(Perhaps VundoFix removed it), but it did find the second entry.
2. ActiveScan stalled on c:\windows\explorer.exe

Here's the new Hijackthis log...

Hi johnh1211 :)

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Next I need you to do this:

Next, download Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 From Here. and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then run a scan by press Start then select Perform Full System Scan, when scan is complete. Click Next place a tick mark in the boxes and press Next it will ask you to remove the objects click OK. I would advise you to empty the quarantined area by clicking on the Open quarantined area , highlight the entries and then press Delete, you'll be asked if you want to delete this archive press OK .
Next you'll need to select Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Running Ad-aware on a regular basis can prevent and infections in the future.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite From Here. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

After doing those instructions I need you to run an on-line virus scan from here Trendmicro

Next I need you to follow the below instructions:

1. Restart your computer. As your computer restarts, repeatedly press the F8 key on your keyboard until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
2. Use the arrow key to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
3. Use an arrow key to select an operating system and press ENTER.
4. When prompted whether you want your Windows to run in safe mode, click Yes.

Before running Ewido you'll need to close all windows and browsers and not use the computer during the scan.

Now you can run Ewido,

1. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
2. Clean any problems it displays
3. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

When all that is finished please can you post the scan results from Ewido and Trendmicro if possible along with a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks
