Help in Removing Trojan.Virtumonde

Unread postby mae7 » March 7th, 2009, 12:33 pm

Hi :) If anyone can help me in any way, it would be much appreciated! :)

I've been recently affected by this trojan, and I've done several scans so far:

1) Scanned with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (twice), have had many files cleaned up. After the first time, ads were still popping up and my PC was running slow. After the second time, the popups have stopped, but my PC is still slow. *Edit* (I ran MBAM for a third time because I had rogue anti-spyware (Spyware Protect 2009), but I think it's clean now..hopefully.)

2) Scanned with Lavasoft Ad-Aware, had a few files cleaned up, but my PC is still running slow.

3) Tried to scan with Windows Defender, didn't work. (I'm guessing it has something to do with the virus?)

4) Scanned and cleaned by Spyware Doctor. I had 188 infections detected by this, and it supposedly fixed these. But upon reboot, my PC was still running slow.

5) Ran Vundofix, didn't detect any files.

Other symptoms: When viewing the Task Manager, the processes are flashing (which is unusual I believe). During startup, I also receive a window saying: "Error loading C:\\WINDOWS\system32\pigutahu.dll. The specified module could not be found." Adobe Photoshop won't open either. It starts to load for a second, then closes by itself.

Again, any help will be appreciated!

Re: Help in Removing Trojan.Virtumonde

Unread postby Odd dude » March 11th, 2009, 10:00 am

Hi :)

Temporarily disable Avast
We need to temporarily disable Avast, so it won't interfere with what we need to do.

  • Right click the Avast tray icon and choose Stop on-access protection
  • Right click the tray icon again and click Program settings
  • On the left, click Troubleshooting
  • Check the box next to Disable avast! self-defense module
  • Click OK

Do not forget to reverse this process before going back on-line!

Disable the Avast self-defence module
The Avast self-defence module can cause blue screen errors when certain tools attempt to terminate Avast.

  • Launch Avast by double-clicking the tray icon
  • Click Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting
  • Put a check next to Disable Avast self-defence module and click OK
  • Close the program

Do not forget to reverse this process before going back on-line!

ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without expert guidance.

ComboFix uses very brute tactics to rip malware off your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file.

:!: Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!! :!:

(If I should give more detailed instructions regarding how to do this, please inform me and do not proceed)

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix.
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running! (Unless ComboFix needs you to do something ;))
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply.

If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, plug the cable/reciever/whatever you use to connect to the internet out and back in.

Uninstall these programs:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 2

Download and install the latest Java from here. The site is a bit confusing; this is what you should do:
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Choose the correct Platform. Also, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Now, click Continue.
  • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
  • Now, close all other windows. Including Internet Explorer.
  • You can now install Java by double-clicking the executable you just downloaded.

Update your Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is old and may contain security leaks. Please first uninstall the older version, then download and install the newest version from here.

WildTangent
You have installed WildTangent. It's not technically malware, but some people consider it to bring malware along. WildTangent is a video game software company, specialized in online games. The WildTangent Web Driver allows you to play 3D games over the internet. It does gather and send a lot of information about your computer to the WildTangent servers. It's not technically spyware, but personally I would not want a program that:
  • gathers data about my operating system
  • gathers data about my CPU type and speed
  • tells its creators how much memory my PC has
  • gathers data about my video card type and driver version
  • gathers data about my sound card type and driver version
  • gathers data about my DirectX version
  • tells its creator from where it was installed
  • takes up MASSIVE amounts of memory and processor power, even while not actively in use
Your call. If you don't want WildTangent after all, you can uninstall WildTangent Web Driver through the Software applet in the Control Panel.

Unread postby mae7 » March 11th, 2009, 11:35 pm

Hi! Thank you for helping me! :)

I performed the updates for Adobe Reader and Java, and I uninstalled Wild Tangent. My Combofix log and new HijackThis log are posted, as well as the new uninstall list.

Though, I'm still getting an error saying Windows can't load "pigutahu.dll".

Re: Help in Removing Trojan.Virtumonde

Unread postby Odd dude » March 12th, 2009, 2:24 am

Hi,

There are a lot of files I can't get any information on. Let's get them checked out.

Submit files for analysis
We need to have something checked for malware. Please go to Jotti's.
  • Click Browse next to File to upload & scan and copy and paste the first line of the following list into the browse box:
    Code: Select all
    c:\program files\Common Files\exehos._sy
    c:\program files\Common Files\qapopi.lib
    c:\program files\Common Files\foqagasyx.dl
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\luwec.exe
    c:\documents and settings\Christina-Mae\Application Data\temexo.vbs
  • Click Submit. The file will now be scanned for malware and the results will be displayed from the screen. Select the part where the virus scan results are shown (the part starting with A-squared and ending with VBA32) and copy and paste this to notepad.
  • Repeat this procedure for any other files I have listed.
  • Copy and paste the whole notepad file you just made into your reply.

Run CFScript
Open notepad and copy/paste the following to it:

Code: Select all
dirlook:

Unread postby mae7 » March 12th, 2009, 3:20 am

Hey :) I can't tell if my computer is running better at the moment, I'll check tomorrow. I just wanted to post the results. But I did notice Adobe Photoshop is working again, so yay! Thank you!

Oh and I'm still getting those missing .dll error messages at startup, but this time they were for 2 different files... :?

Open hijackthis, click do a system scan only, put a check next to this, click fix checked.
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
If windows defender pops up, allow the change.

Now - do you still get any of those 'could not find ....' pop ups when you start the system?

Let's also run a good scanner. The hijackthis looks okay but an extra check can't hurt.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it.

I did what you told me to do on HJT, and I don't see those "couldn't find..." pop-ups anymore! Thank you!

And I did a full scan with MBAM, here's my log:

Excellent. The last hijackthis log you posted was clean of malware, so I think it's time for removal of used tools and prevention tips now.

Uninstall ComboFix
  • Disable all your antimalware programs like you did previously
  • Click Start > Run and enter:
    Code: Select all
    ComboFix /u
  • Click OK
  • ComboFix will now uninstall itself

If you don't have any other issues, then I think all the malware is gone!

Congratulations!

As far as I can tell, you are CLEAN!

Have a big cup of Image, sit back & relax, and now please follow a few of the following tips; they will dramatically reduce your chance of getting infected again.

  • Turn on Automatic Updates if you have not done so. It is MANDATORY to keep your Windows updated, otherwise you are vulnerable to exploits! To turn on Automatic Updates: click Start > Control Panel > Security Centre > Automatic Updates.

Below are optional items. They will increase your security, but are not really "needed". That said, I recommend following at least one of these tips.

  • Run a quick scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware every week - it's a great program.
  • Install WinPatrol from here. Instructions for use are here.

  • Install a custom hosts file. Let's say I have a directory of 640kb's worth of bad sites. Let's say I can make sure you will never be able to access those sites, so you will never get any infection from those sites. It's like blocking a site - without site blocking tools. How would you like to never be able to visit (a lot, but not all of the) malware-infected sites again? Well, now you can!
First, we must disable a service, as Windows cannot work with a very large hosts file while that service is active. This will not affect anything else.
    The disabling routine:
    • Click Start, then Run
    • Copy and paste the following:
      Code: Select all
      sc config dnscache start= disabled
    • Click OK
Next, you can download the custom hosts file from here. Installation instructions can be found there as well.

Please reply to this thread once more so we know it can be archived

Happy surfing!! :)
