Trojan horses coming back from the dead?

Unread postby rjl » March 5th, 2009, 12:01 pm

My computer is running fairly slowly and AVG keeps finding (Backdoor?) trojan horses, some of which seem to return after I have re-started the computer, even when AVG says that it has deleted them. Please find the HijackThis log below. I would be very grateful for any help you can give.

Unread postby rjl » March 16th, 2009, 6:31 am

Hello Shaba,
Thanks very much for getting back to me. I'm not sure if I still need help. I ran Superantispyware and Malwarebytes' Antimalware which both found rootkits and trojan horses and seem to have deleted them. My computer then began to run a lot faster, but recently seems to have slowed down again a little, so I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at this new log.
Many thanks,
Richard

  • Download random''s system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Reason for slowness is here:

Total RAM: 246 MB (23% free)

You have little RAM.

I can suggest some programs which you can disable from starting but adding RAM is the thing which helps more.

Hello,
and thanks very much for taking a look at that. I'm sorry I wasn't able to reply sooner.

Does that mean that my computer is now clean? I ask because I remember reading that having had a backdoor trojan horse (one of the trojans AVG previously identified was a Backdoor Generic10.AOSN, on my computer as jcgfit.dll (which kept coming back)) could mean that the computer might never again be entirely safe.

I'd be very grateful if you could suggest some ways of adding RAM by disabling some programs, as I'm not currently in a position to be able to add more.

Many thanks,
Richard

That is not a backdoor but adware, vundo.

File is gone but registry entry is there:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: jcgfit - jcgfit.dll (file missing)

You can fix that entry with HijackThis (open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark that one.
Close all windows including browser and press fix checked. Reboot afterwards)

As for unneeded startups, these can go as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{0228e555-4f9c-4e35-a3ec-b109a192b4c2}] C:\Program Files\Google\Gmail Notifier\gnotify.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.0.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.0\program\quickstart.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Reboot after that and post back a fresh RSIT log, please.

Re: Trojan horses coming back from the dead?

Hello,
and sorry for the late reply. The computer is now a bit faster, though is still dragging its boots a little. I guess I might eventually need to add extra RAM.

Sorry to bother you with this again, but just wondered if you could let me know whether two other trojan horses that AVG previously found are worth worrying about now. They were:
a Backdoor.Generic10.AlKQ, on my computer as C:\WINDOWS\temp\BNE.tmp, and
a Backdoor.Agent.ZCE, identified as Win32.Agent.U, in the location C:\WINDOWS\Temp\BND.tmp.

If those are ok, is it reasonably safe to assume the computer is now clean?

Many thanks,
Richard
