Adware search engine infection

Unread postby btwhitehurst » March 2nd, 2009, 12:30 pm

Hi Guys,
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am experiencing that every search in any search engine, Google, Yahoo, MSN gives back links to advertisement websites with no link relevance. The result is the same for IE and Firefox

Ex: A search for windows in google shows -

Microsoft Windows Update
Latest bug fixes for Microsoft Windows, including fixes for some possible DoS attacks.
* hxxp://www.monstermarketplace.com

I'm assuming an adware virus has infected a search engine registry setting.

Re: Adware search engine infection

Unread postby btwhitehurst » March 21st, 2009, 10:15 pm

This infection is quite annoying. I think a windows update subdued it for a few weeks but now it's back. Any search in Internet Explorer will either link to an advertisement web site or crash IE. Firefox seems to be uninfected at the moment.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Here is my latest hijackthis.log

I think I have it for now. I used ComboFix referenced from other posts with the same problem and it removed a few files. It seems to be working now.

We're sorry you did not receive a response to your topic. This is most likely because you have replied to your own topic multiple times prior to receiving a response from a helper. Our helpers are looking for topics with zero responses. When you post replies to your own topic, it no longer has zero responses, and so it appears that you have received help when in fact, you have not.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Malware Removal forum and wait for assistance. DO NOT reply to your own topic until you have received a response from a helper. Helpers are looking for topics that have zero replies. If you post a reply in your own topic before you've received a response from a helper, your topic will no longer have zero replies and will likely be mistaken for one where a helper is already assisting and will, therefore, be passed over.

Thank you for your cooperation.

This topic is now closed.
