Hi TLNEWTON, we have some more work to be done so hang in there a bit longer.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following: ( if present ).

Ad-aware 6 << can no longer be updated
WeatherBug

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6-
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
Java(TM) 6 Update 5-
Java(TM) 6 Update 7-

:Remove bad HijackThis entries:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.iwon.com/
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

If an Administrator has not set a policy restricting access to Internet Explorer settings and you have not configured any software such as Spybot S & D or a similar program to prevent changing Internet Explorer settings, then you should also fix the following 06 entry with HijackThis:

      O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

It may be helpful to know that when you put an item in your Trusted Zone, it has pretty much full access to your computer. Are you sure you trust this site to that degree? If you're not sure, and/or you do not need to have a site in your trusted zone in order to facilitate access, or you did not knowingly permit this access yourself, then please fix the following O15 entry or entries.

      O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Chuck:

That is my work computer that is infected. I am now home and will have to follow up on the next set of instructions tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

I ordered the anti-virus program from Kapersky's. I figured if McAfee was not able to catch this it wasn't worth the money it costs.

Chuck:

The computer is not working very well either. It is running slow for different switching between programs or web-pages. it is just plain slow which means that some of the virus is still affecting performance.

This is the computer I have in my office, and I have two at home. I am connected as my computer runs my business. Is there a problem with doing work on my business computer? Actually I just read this:

If you ask for help and, unknown to us, it involves a business computer, you need to understand that any damages resulting from our advice are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Since I am the corporate chief executive, the entire business is my responsibility. LOL

Re: Generic!Artemis Infection

Unread postby TLNEWTON » March 3rd, 2009, 5:04 pm

I did purchase Kapersky's Anti-Virus Software and put it on this computer which involved taking McAfee off of the computer. After running the scan it showed two potential viruses and several threats. I let the computer fix itself and quarantine items that were involved with the infection.

Is this the completion of the reporting?

Hi TLNEWTON, well as you found the post that we do not work on business computers, i must inform you that i have to stop at this point because of the rules at MWR. That we do not work on business computers.
If this computer is part of a network, the entire network could become infected. If your company does not have an IT department, then you need to have someone come in and make sure that this and any other computers on the network are clean.
Wish i could be of more assistance but i can't.

Good Luck

As this issue involves a business computer and, therefore, falls outside the scope of this forum, this topic is now closed.

This computer, if it is connected to a network, should immediately be removed from that network until it can be ascertained that it is in fact clean. All other computers that have been connected to the same network with the infected machine should be carefully inspected by someone with the expertise to evaluate the condition of each system.
