Freaky best man website

Unread postby dtheall » February 9th, 2009, 10:37 am

Let me say first, I know better about clicking on unknown websites and I'm feeling foolish. Got a link to the website in the subject line.
hxxp://www.freakybestmanspeech.com/
Curiosity got the better of me. Firefox said the url was safe. But when I got to the site, a bunch of popups came up and some were blocked. Also, my McAfee scan was running at the time. I noticed the website paused the scan. I restarted the scan. I never clicked on the video. Then I noticed my virus scan had paused again. It never does that! So I was like, oh no! I cannot find anything about this url in forums or on McAfee. I ran Kapersky scan - clean. McAfee - clean. Malware bytes - clean. I will run Spybot & Superanti spyware. I am not having any 'funny' things happen on the my machine except that Mcafee scan pause I mentioned. Can you please check my Hijack log? thank you. Donna

Hello and Welcome to forums!

My name is Bio-Hazard and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

----------------------------------------------------------
Please note: Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click ---> Run As Administrator
----------------------------------------------------------

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Hello!

Logs are clean. Are you experiencing any other kind of problems?

----------------------------------------------------------
Please note: Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click ---> Run As Administrator
----------------------------------------------------------

Disable Windows Defender

From your log i can see this that you are running a Windows Defender. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it. To disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection.

  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender

Note: Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Back Up registry with ERUNT

  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it on to your desktop. HERE
  • Click on the erunt-setup.exe
  • Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
  • Choose language
  • A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO

    Image
  • Backup your registry to the default location

Note: To restore your registry (if needed), go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 12.
  • Go to HERE
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Update Adobe Reader

Please uninstall older version of Adobe Reader before installing the latest version

  • Click Start
  • Control Panel
  • Double clicking on Add/Remove Programs
  • Locate older version of Adobe Reader and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it
  • Click HERE to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Select your Windows version and click on Download. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you. If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Close your Internet browser and open it again.

Hi. I am not having any problems. Just wanted to be sure I was not infected. I will perform the steps you note at some point today and post. If you read this before I do, I'd like to know what is OTMoveit3? What does that do?

Hello!

OTMoveIt3 is program we use to remove files, folders, registry entries and so on. Thats pretty much all i can say about it. OTMoveIt makes it easier for us and the users to remove these entries. Those registry entries are orphan entries thats why i am removing them.

Hello - I have not forgotten your request. Just been busy. I updated Java & Adobe this morning. Now I'm off to work. Will clean up the registry later today or tomorrow and post new logs....thanks for your help, I really appreciate your expertise and what this forum is doing to combat the baddies out there! Donna

Hello. I am not comfortable with deleting registry items. I know you have instructed me to backup and use the omoveit tool. I don't usually mess with registry...not that I don't trust your expertise but why do I have to remove those orphan entries? Will they bother/hurt anything? I get nervous when registry is involved. Will the computer still boot up if something goes wrong and I have to run the backup? I would like to understand why the orphan entries have to be removed and if it is really necessary. This is my inexperience talking not me doubting your knowledge/expertise. thanks. Donna

Hello Donna!

It is good to ask questions if you are unsure about something. It is ok to leave the orphan entries in to the registry if you are not comfortable doing the fix. Orphan entries wont harm your computer, it is like doing a "spring clean".Lets skip that fix and move on.

Could you please post a new HijackThis log for me to see.

I'm all for keeping the computer lean and clean...I'm just not as knowledgeable as I'd like to be with performing certain operations. I keep my programs up to date, I clean out old files....the standard stuff. I don't get too detailed and wouldn't even know about cleaning up my registry! Here is my new hijack this log. thanks!

  • Close Windows Defender

Note: Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Hello!

That item was a rophan entry and it is very easy to fix with HijackThis.

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

You can get rid of the tools we used:

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints. General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

      • Right Click >> Computer
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Protection tab.
      • Uncheck All drives
      • Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".
      • Restart your computer.

      Hide system files

      • Click on Start > Control Panel.
      • Double click on Folder Options.
      • Select the View tab.
      • Under Hidden files and folders, select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • Check (tick) these two boxes:
Hide extensions for known file types
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • Click Yes when Windows prompts.
      • Click OK to apply the settings.
  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
  • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector or F-secure Health Check. I suggest that you run one of them at least once a month.
  • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

  • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE. Here are two tutorials: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide.
  • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead: Firefox or Opera

Here is a great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware.

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
