Google (or Yahoo) search results are being sent to ad site. Can be defeated by using "advanced search". Notice a redirect to 7.7.7.0 at the bottom when doing a search. Tried several adware/malware removal programs without success. HijackThis log follows:

Hello and welcome to the Malware Removal Forums

If you still require help please reply with a Fresh HJT log and follow the below instructions :flower:

IMPORTANT

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • If you have any questions or are unsure in anyway, please let me know. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • As I am still in training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by one of the teachers. Therefore, there may be a slight delay between posts.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

FYI, McAffe found new Trojan called Lando yesterday and claimed to have removed it, and now my Google appears to be working correctly. I still believe I have a problem with Adware Alert, however. I've tried to un install it several times and it alway returns.

Hi Fritzer,

I see by your log that you are running Mcafee Antivirus but there are signs of Symantec on your System including Nortons Password Manager. Do you use Password Manager? Or is it a left over from an old installation. Please let me know before we continue.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

I had Norton AV at one time and an update failed and I got McAffee instead. However, password manager continued to function. I don't really need it, and I would dispose of it easily to fix the computer, but I do, in fact, use it.

Hi Fritzer,

Nortons Password Manager is ok, I just wanted to check if you used it so I did not remove it with the rest of Norton’s remnants.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

NOTE The below fix in removing leftover Symantec files could break Password Manager If this is the case it can be re-downloaded as a stand-alone component. If you do not want to take the chance they can be left alone, it will not interfere with the rest of our fix.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O16 - DPF: {CE28D5D2-60CF-4C7D-9FE8-0F47A3308078} (ActiveDataInfo Class) - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/ctrl/SymAData.cab
    O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Next Click on Main Menu thenMisc Tools, and then press the Delete an NT service.. button. When it opens you should then enter the service name and press OK.

Service: Symantec Core LC

Repeat the above for

Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler

Close HijackThis.

Next Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

Thanks Muppy03

I'm not sure how well the Symantec fragements were removed. The "fix" in HiJack seemed to work, but deleting the service sections always resulted in a "component critical for operation, cannot delete" message (exact syntax may vary).

Hi Fritzer,

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. Please disable Tea Timer once again.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.exe -boot
    O4 - Startup: ScreenSaverManager.exe
    O16 - DPF: {CE28D5D2-60CF-4C7D-9FE8-0F47A3308078} -

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdmaud.sys
    c:\documents and settings\Fritz\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ScreenSaverManager.exe
    C:\noadware.exe

    Folder::
    c:\program files\NoAdware
    c:\documents and settings\Fritz\Application Data\AdwareAlert

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
    "aux"=-

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply along with a New HJT log.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi Fritzer,

How the comp running, what is the re-direct situation like now?

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Please reply with:-

I'm back, Muppy. Thanks for you help so far.

I installed adobe 9 as instructed, and ran Kaspersky:
The performance report is that the google search hijack is gone, and I would say the computer is noticeably quicker.

Kaspersky was tough to run as it took hours, and stalled twice (probably my fault, not getting everything turned off), but I did get it to complete a scan today, and the results are below. It appears there are still some issues:

Hi Fritzer,

What is E: Drive?

There is infection showing in your Outlook Express

Unfortunately I cannot precisely pinpoint the exact e-mails that are infected.

    E:\DATA\archive.pst Suspicious: Exploit.HTML.Iframe.FileDownload 1
    E:\DATA\backup.pst Infected: Email-Worm.VBS.KakWorm 8
    E:\Outlook Express\Deleted Items.dbx Infected: Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.pac 1
    E:\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 1

I will let you decide what you want done with these. Please advise on your next post.

Next

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
     KillAll::

    File::
    C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\Common\ComponentMgr\HoldingArea\WebSys\WebSys.mmz
    C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\WebSys\offline.mmz

Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks again Muppy03.

The E: (and F:) drives on this computer are a single partitioned drive that I added some time ago for data. Somehow the Outlook Express Data files ended up on E: rather than C: when I had a computer store move data from an old computer to this one (at least I think I remember that, it's been a while). Anyway, I deleted the suspect files in E:\Data as that was left over stuff anyway. I ran Combofix as requested (log will follow), and Kaspersky can't see a problem in MusicMatch directory anymore or in E:\Data. I'm puzzled about the two occurrences in the Outlook dbx files. I've cleaned and filed the InBox until it's empty, and then emptied the Deleted Items, but Kaspersky continues to see the same problems in the Inbox, and Deleted Items dbx files. Curiously, the dbx files continue to show fairly large file sizes, even though they are empty. If I delete these two files, will outlook express recreate them?

Update: I moved the two dbx files in question to another directory, and Outlook express ran just fine without them. They are currently zipped and in another drive. Kaspersky now does not detect them. I'll hang on to the zipped file a little longer, and if I don't find any problems I'll delete them too.

Things are running well. Outlook Express continues to function. My system ran McAffee today as scheduled, and it detected something "suspicious" in Combofix and a related registry entry, but that's all. Norton Password manager is broken (and I no longer have the original CD to re-install it from), but I can live without that. Do you think I can just remove the remnants in the Windows Add and Remove programs? Again, not a big issue. The computer boots faster and seems less prone to stalling. Ran ATF-Cleaner.
