microsoft download site (amongst others) not connecting

I should have posted more details of the problems I am having, hence the late edit.

When using google.co.uk, I get to what appears to be a normal results page, but clicking on a result sends me all over the place.

Using +, " or - in the search string sends me to another results page altogether.

The google.co.uk page is not the same one I get when I use my works laptop. The logo doesn't update on special days etc, so I think it's a corrupt or hijacked page.

Using google.com works just fine, it's just the UK page that's infected.

Another problem is that when I try to download microsoft updates or some other sites, I get a page load error saying I've typed in the address incorrectly or I have a network timeout.

The above problems happen on both IE and Firefox.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.

• Start HijackThis
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

your current HJT is out of date HijackThis v1.99.1
remove it via add and remove programs

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

* Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please download SmitFraudFix.exe by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.

1. Right click on SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run As Administrator. If Vista UAC is turned on, you will receive a prompt. Please allow it.
   
2. Smitfraudfix will start running. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
   
3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.
   
4. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Read more here

Your computer has multiple infections, including a rootkit. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

• Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  
• Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  
• Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  
• From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

DO NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its rootkit functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

Hi Dan,

Oh dear, this sounds serious. As far as I'm aware, nothing has been compromised, bank wise. If I do any internet banking is is on my works laptop behind their firewall. I just didn't trust this machine, and it seems I was right.

I have an XP installation disk, so could probably wipe the machine and restore from that. Most of the files I have are backed up on my external hard drive (my c: disk is a pitiful 18gb), so I guess I wouldn't lose anything. This infection wouldn't affect that drive would it? It's a Packard Bell Data Secure drive, which you can use to do a one click backup.

Either way, your help and advice would be most welcome.

Hi, Andy, sorry it wasn't better news
To be on the safe side I would get your external hardrive scanned with an online scanner to see what turns up.
Let me know if you decide to reformat.

I'm sure it gives you the option to chose which drives to scan!

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
   
2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
   
3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
   
4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
   Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
   Archives
   Mail databases
5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
   
6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
   
7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
   
8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
   
9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Needless to say, the program downloaded OK, but it couldn't upload any updates...am trying again though.

I just did a backup of just application data (office docs, music, pics etc) and am preparing myself for the worst. I've dug out the XP operating system reinstallation CD and will be ready to go shortly.

How do I wipe the c:drive? I've done this once before, but it was ages ago.
