Malware present - Slows traffic online

Unread postby duniyadnd » January 29th, 2009, 1:28 am

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with some software blocking me from accessing certain sites (including getfirefox.com, sometimes gmail.com and other regular domains). Along with that, it's having a field day popping up advertisements on any of the browsers I try to run (IE 8, Safari, Chrome and Opera). I had to uninstall Firefox as that became virtually unusable and thought that it may have gotten infected.

When I run msconfig and in the "Startup" tab, I notice two lines which I don't recognize.
Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\tomemani.dll",s
Rundll32.exe "c:\windows\system32\zuhotuzo.dll",a

I suspected that those are the culprits and for some reason I am unable to uncheck them. Every time I uncheck them, and come back to MSConfig, they are checked. I notice their names are mentioned in the registry, and deleting them does nothing. I tried this in Normal Mode as well as Safe Mode. Obviously I could not find any physical files named tomemani.*, zuhotuzo.* or tomemane.*.

Below is the log file using HijackThis.
I've highlighted the two lines "red" which I suspect is the issue.

Thanks for the help in advance. :)

I've just run Avast Home Edition and was unable to find any viruses, though it was a quick sweep, I didn't do a thorough scan.

Remove P2P programs - MalWare Removal has a policy on P2P programs installed:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.

  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

You have the following P2P program(s) installed:
BitComet 1.05

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    BitComet 1.05

Note: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

There is no sign of a Third Party Firewall installed on your system.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

There are several possible reasons for the Firewall not showing.
  1. You are using Windows Firewall. This is not recommended as it will only stop incoming material. It permits all outgoing traffic.
  2. You are using a hardware firewall. It should be complemented with a Third Party Software Firewall
  3. You have a firewall, but you disabled it. Please re-enable it.
  4. You don't have a firewall at all.

If you don't have a third party firewall, please get ONE firewall and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.

Online Armor
Comodo Personal Firewall

Please post back a new HijackThis log after installing the firewall.

Re: Malware present - Slows traffic online

Unread postby duniyadnd » January 29th, 2009, 2:38 am

Just a quick update. I can finally download Firefox again and access other sites which I could not access before.

Also the advertisements seemed to have stopped which is a huge plus. In the MSConfig Startup tab, I still see those two lines checked off even though I had opted to delete them via Online Armor - I guess it worked in deleting it from the place it needed to.

Right now I have a process named oasrv.exe running like crazy at around 17-25 CPU - and I'm guessing that's the Online Armor software.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

If you have Avast as anti virus an additional thing has to be changed to make ComboFix work properly:

Hi, I need to see the complete combofix log, you have just sent me the header :(
Can you just copy all logs straight into your thread and not use the code boxes,It makes it hard to follow.
thanks :)

ps I need you to disable avast as it's been active during the scan.

Hiya,

About the ComboFix log, that was the complete file. :(

I did a complete search on my harddrive to see if there was anothe instance with the same file name, but no luck. I've also uninstalled Avast Home, so that shouldn't show up any longer.

Here is an updated (without code tags) ComboFix log - even though it's only the headers: Below that is the HijackThis log.
