Hello

I would appreciate some assistance with my pc which is running Windows XP.

Over the past week I have had the following problems:

AVG ( free ) wont update
Internet is slow
Google searches redirecting
More data being sent than received

Hijack This and Malwarebytes wouldn't run however I managed to download HiJack This onto a clean PC and re-name the file and transfer to the infected PC.

Here is the HiJack This log

Remove P2P programs - MalWare Removal has a policy on P2P programs installed:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.

  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

You have the following P2P program(s) installed:
LimeWire, FrostWire,

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    LimeWire, FrostWire,

Note: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Was OK until the Malwarebytes instal...it gets half way through the installation and gets stuck at "extracting files".

This happens in safe mode also.

Thanks

When you say it won't run do you mean your unable to start up the program! or when you click on scan, the scan doesn't run?
If your still having problems with it uninstall via control panel add and remove programs then download again.
will catch you later.

Hi..I uninstalled malwarebytes via the control panel and downloaded onto a clean PC, re-named it and then loaded the program onto the infected pc. I managed to install it OK however when I go to launch it nothing happens...ie the "hourglass" appears for a few seconds and then nothing .

Thanks again.

Can I ask, what tools you ran on this pc before asking for help as not a lot is jumping out at me.
As for malwarebytes why did you rename it? Download it again as you did, but don't rename it and see if it runs.
Also send me another rsit scan report.
